Hi people. I hope you can help me. I've got a 1979 924 that has points fitted - no electronic control boxes to be seen anywhere. Anyhow, there had been a fire and the fuse and relay board got toasted along with lots of the associated wiring looms . I can't find wiring diagrams to suit my car - I suppose it's patterned on some other German machine but I don't know - do you?

Can you give me a steer? Thanks in anticipation.

Just Google "wiring diagram 1979 Porsche 924" and you'll find all the original Porsche Workshop Manuals, diagrams and images of the fuse and relay boards, and so forth -- including access to different manuals -- not all of which are considered ethical or legal to download. By all means purchasing a Hanes manual rather than downloading is recommended.

Hi, yes thanks for your input. I've got the original Haynes from 1981 and it's brilliant but it doesn't show any 924 wiring diagrams with points. I Googled the *uck out of it but still had no joy. Have you seen anything? If so please enlighten me. Cheers.

I believe that none of the '79's came with points, but at least some of the '76's did. You might need to use the 76 diagram for the ignition setup.

I believe Pertronix makes a replacement for the 924 points set up. I had an old International Scout and put in a Pertronix setup and the first one lasted 15 years. The second was in when I sold it.

I checked wiring diagrams for the 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979 924s in the 1979 Porsche Workshop Manual, and all the diagrams there had breakerless electronic ignition. Also, the (U.S. published) Chilton's Porsche 924 and 928 1977-81 Manual states on p. 40:
Quote:
All 928 models and all 924 and 924 Turbo models though 1980 are equipped with the Bosch Transistorized Ignition Coil Ignition System.

Even so, MikeJinCO's confirmation makes sense so as to look for a 1976 wiring diagram with points -- something worth pursuing since john h points out in this thread 924 ignition coil wiring colours that a wiring diagram with the points ignition system was in an early Haynes Manual. There's some guesses in that thread about some of the wiring for the coil.

Also, see 1978 924 points ignition-wiring system where some suggested diagrams are listed by Ozzie, and more here Post subject: 1977 924 how do you change points. Several posts suggest conversion kits -- that Pertronix kit might be like the one MikeJinCO mentioned.

According to Original Porsche, breakerless ignition was installed on all US 924's from the beginning, but elsewhere traditional ignition was installed until 1980.

Guys, your help has been brilliant. Through your links I have the correct diagram here in my hand, courtesy of a post from 'Ozzie' in 2009.

Thanks to one and all - I'll be back soon, no doubt, as I begin to tackle my re-wire.

BTW I'm going to customise my dashboard but no ideas have yet crystallised in my mind as to what it could look like. I wanna use stock clocks and instruments as these all seemed to work when I last drove the vehicle some 7 or so years ago - anyone got any ideas/pointers?

Thanks again men.
