Hi
All my mates have Porsches so I thought I should join them. Better still, mine was bought by the boss as my work car, so it cost me nothing!
I am the editor of "Classic Driver", a New Zealand- based classic car magazine and it was time for me to get something more appropriate than a Ford Mondeo as a work vehicle so I now have a 1979 924 Turbo sitting in the driveway.
The opbject is to run an on-going series in the magazine about using an entry-level "classic" as a daily driver, and as I do a pretty large mileage crossing the country to look at and play with other people's old and interesting cars (a tough job, but someone has to do it!), I thought a Porsche was an ideal choice, and the boss agreed, so here I am. I know bugger-all about 924s, and have never driven one until I drove this one home last week so I am sure I will have plenty of stupid questions to ask

Yes, bargain of the year! It is a MUCH better car to look at and to drive than I ever thought it would be. It reinforces what I have always said, there is no such thing as a bad Porsche. The drive from Dunedin to Christchurch was great.
It needs a few things done to it but nothing drastic or expensive at all, and it will be going into Autothority hopefully next week.
All it needs after that is new carpet in the front and a new boot carpet (it has a full size spare wheel and carpet for a space saver, so it doesn't fit, and looks like crap. Replace the dead clock with an oil pressure gauge and either find a better dash top (which I susoect is unlikely) or get this one repaired or recovered.

You can guarantee that! The car and what I have been doing to it and with it will be in every issue from now on.
Taking it to Ruapuna on Monday to give some kids with cancer a few hot laps. My 932, mates with two Boxsters and a mid 80s 3.2 911, as well as a full race Escort Mexico and one of the race school's V8 touring cars. Should be fun for the kids and a blast for the drivers!

Oh... and fix the heater fan which is as much use as an asthmanitic blowing through a straw - that is on the odd occasion it actually works. Without aircon it gets bloody hot inside. Worse is the "special" 1970s McPorsche tartan seat material has obviously fallen apart on the drivers seat and it had been recovered in black vinyl. It looks ok but it sweats something chronic on a warm day. If it is my daily driver (and it will be) and covering huge distances (it certainly will be as I seem to be crosoing Cook Straight once a month, every month) either I need another tartan red seat, or get these ones redone in something else! My choice is black leather but I don't think the boss's budget is going to run to that.

Hi Sam

Will do! I haven't been to the Bay for a while so it is time I found an excuse to head back that way. Beer and natter sounds like a great idea. All I need is an interesting car from the area to go in the magazine and that is my excuse all ready to go! Last time I was over that way was Feb, just after the Art Deco weekened where I took over a vintage Bentley to do the North Island section of the UK Bentley Driver's Club tour of NZ which I helped organise.
