|
|
Hey everyone
on my last drive out I noticed a strong pull to the left (drivers side - US) and on a hunch - I checked the brakes to see if something was binding - when I jacked the car, I tried spinning the wheels and I could hear , what sounded like the brake dragging. The wheel moved, but not as freely as I thought it should. When I checked the passenger side it was worse, the wheel hardly rotated.
Is this something that could have caused such a pull while driving?
And does anyone know what could cause the brakes to start to do this?
Any thoughts?

rubber flex hoses failed internally
calipers or shoes physically sticking.
Pull the problematic wheel and see if cracking the bleeder valve and prying on the caliper to move the pads will fix the issue. If so then your flex lines need to be replaced.
If not then you've got a caliper sticking and will need to be rebuilt/lubricated properly. _________________ Stefan

Thanks Stefan
I replaced the rubber with the braided hoses - I think a year or 2 ago - does not mean it could not fail - I had hoped at the time that it would be better. I will try the other things you mentioned
do you think it could create that kind of pull? I thought I read somewhere that that could be a problem. _________________ 1979 924 n/a

Certainly can and will. If one brake is on and the other ones are off, it will pull the car in that direction. Its how modern stability control systems work. _________________ Stefan

What Stefan said. Also, if it was my car I'd rebuild those calipers right away. In fact, I would have done that at the same time I changed the brake hoses. How are your bearings? _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

yes - I replaced everything a year or 2 ago - but admittingly, I am not 100% sure about them - I do not have any vibration so I thought the bearings may be ok (also new) the car did not behave this way when the brakes were first done, but I am sure that does not mean something could not show up later. I am hoping to get a look today if not it will have to wait until Sat. I will look to see how everything is working. Is there anything else I should look at while I am under there?
thanks again

Not looking good for solid disc calipers or rebuild kits. Might be time for 4 wheel disc conversion? _________________ Toofah King Bad

or upgrade to the slightly larger Passat calipers, which might be more commonly available in decent rebuilds. _________________ Stefan

Is the 79 brake routing from the MC a TT, H or X split? Maybe the MC is failing. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

thanks everyone
I believe the '79 has an "x" connection - front rt. with rear left and visa versa
I did find some older posts on here that used a passat set-up I will check the other links as well
I did a quick test last night, and the fluid had no problem flowing and had no bubbles. When I spun the wheels, I had my son hit the brakes and they stopped quickly. I also did not see any strange dragging type marks on the rotors - they looked clean - like I would imagine newer brakes would look.
I am concerned about pedal travel and the mc - I am going to check the adjustment on the rear - they may need attended to.
I thought I had a line on a 944 for some parts earlier when the car had transmission issues. But it was sold before I could look into it.
Cash will be a little tight for a while so I can't look into too much - besides trying to get this to work at the moment. _________________ 1979 924 n/a

I did a quick test drive after bleeding, adjusting and tugging on some of the suspension. I did not hear anything while it was on the stands.
I noticed a thump thump sound when coming to a stop - it's a low sound but on freshly paved road it is consistent and noticeable.
could that still be brake or would that be suspension?
the only thing was I could not tell what side - if that matters at this point
any thoughts?
thanks

Could easily be a wheel bearing. _________________ 78 924 NA
