|
|
Hey everyone -
I am finally getting to work on the transmission to check gear shift bushings and I am wondering if there are tips for the lower and upper trans mount boltswhere it is connected to the torque tube -they seem impossible to reach (right now they are soaking in a flood of pb blaster)
I think everything else has been coming out ok so far
I had even wondered if it would be just as easy to leave it attached to the tt and remove it from up front and slide the whole thing out at once - any thoughts ?
thanks very much

Once you disconnect the trans mounts and lower it a bit you can get at the TT bolts.
Here's a tip: DO NOT MESS UP THE DRIVESHAFT COLLAR BOLTS! _________________ Toofah King Bad

Rasta's talking about the bolts on either side of the coupler that connects the driveshaft (what's it actually called btw?) to the transmission's input shaft. My advice is to make sure you remove those two bolts before disconnecting the transmission housing from the torque tube. This is done through the 2 access holes, one of which is circular on the bottom of the trans. case, the other is a half circle at the end of the torque tube.
The top mounting bolts are a nightmare to get to on a snailshell, and there isn't any particularly easy way that I've found. I will tell you to make sure those bolts find their way back in, and as tight as possible. I've had them loosen up and back out, and the result is a broken coupler which is not easy to find! _________________ 1979 924 NA

thanks - I will look again
I am having extra difficulty(besides not being the brightest) with this because of some mobility issues from an earlier summer surgery -
I am kinda wondering if you can remove the transmission and torque tube in one piece -?
remove the bolts at the bell housing and back the whole thing out?
If I can't get these I may have to put it all back together and try again later -
thanks very much

how bad/involved is that? would it have to come all the way out or just lowered a little?
as bad as it sounds that may become an option - I don't know how accessible that ball cap on the shift lever will be with the tt in place - it seems like it would be easier to get at with everything out of the way - ?
although space is becoming an issue - both under the car work space wise and in the garage
thanks - the help is always appreciated greatly

Stop trying to think of ways to make the task of removing those upper bolts "easier" by removing more stuff. It's just not gonna happen. Many of us here have been in the same boat.
If you have mobility problems, the best advice I can give you is to call up the smallest person you know and have them get their squirelly hands in there. Otherwise the only other tip I can give you is: Socket plus wobble bit, plus at least a 24 inch extension _________________ 1979 924 NA

On the allen head bolts for the coupler you may need to slip a cheater bar over the allen wrench or ratchet/breaker bar to crack them loose. The bolts need to be completely removed. Then you can lever a small crow bar or large screwdriver to help shift the coupling. It should go either way I think last one we shoved it to the transmission side. _________________ Ken - ebay: wandrey1 , *0 , *00 , *01

thanks -
I'll grab one of those and give it another go. with how these bolts are on there I almost think it should be one of the first things to try to break loose in the whole process - otherwise your progress can come to a grinding hault until you can get them - I did not want to do anything to damage them like Rasta had warned against
thanks again
