What would you offer (if anything) for a 84 944 engine with 62K original miles on it with the original timing and balance shaft belts, as well as the original waterpump, and rollers and pulleys?
Seller says the clutch was replaced about 10K-12K miles ago with a parts cost of about $900 in 1990, and he doesn't know if it's a rubber centered clutch disc or if it has springs.
Engine is still in the car, and the Seller says he can run it for potential buyers.
Sellers says that there is no reason to replace the waterpump, rollers, pulleys or seals, and he has never heard of the belts breaking before 60K miles or changing the belts based on age.
Seller says he parked the car 20 years ago after he ran into the back of it with his tractor. Seller says he is the 2nd owner of this car.
He's asking $600 obo for the engine. What do you think? |

As with anything it depends on the buyer. I have paid less than 600 for complete cars with good engines, but engines by themselves can bring 500 to 1500 depending on who is asking and who is buying. I wouldnt buy it because I dont need it, I have one sitting in my garage.
All in all the story behind the engine sounds fishy though.. _________________ 87 924s

Might want to check out 944spec.org, and get in touch with 944 owners in your area. You might find a guy parting out his racecar, or, have spare engines on hand. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Actually, $600 for a long block 944 engine is not a bad price. I'd offer $500. You're still gonna have to do all the standard maintenance, but you know that. One thing you'd be disappointed in is the performance. The early 944 engines had a lower comp ratio than your 924S, and a less aggressive cam too. The late cam is a nice upgrade for the early engine, but getting the CR up requires changing the pistons. If you just need a spare engine 'in case' then this isn't a bad deal. It's true that complete cars can be had for around the same prie, but then you're the one pulling the engine... _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

You can shave the head on the early piston cars and match the HP and comp-ratio of the 88 piston cars. _________________ Current project 1981 931

True, but as explained by Jon Milledge, the shave is worth more than the valve timing change loss.
I just did a 944 spec legal engine with max shaved head and it made 140 at the rear wheels. Very healthy.  _________________ Current project 1981 931
