I converted my 931 to a open cone K&N air filter.
So I have placed a small breather filter on the catch tank.
But is the engine runs it smokes constantly out of the small filter of the catch tank, is this normal ?

If you remove the breather filter, does it still smoke? _________________ '83 944 Track car.

The OEM air filter setup pulls that from the crankcase to a certain extent, and recycles it. Did the car run differently once you put the cone filter on it? You have a classic case of blow-by. I had this in spades on my previous engine, putting anything over that plastic AOS thingy produced clouds of blue smoke out the back. My current engine is totally rebuilt top to bottom, and I still get some oily moisture out of that tube; mine going to atmosphere at the moment.
I have a secondary catch-can, which didn't work with my weak motor, I plan to install it soon. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

| I would think the the amount of smoke coming out should be minimal. I'm in the process of replacing the hoses and broken catch can as we speak. I've run my engine up to operating temp a couple times with the catch can removed and haven't noticed any smoke coming out the open hose. |

I get some smoke too!
Its not unusual, you just dont see it when its being recycled through the panl filter!
The more smoke, the more worn is your motor! _________________ 1980 924 Turbo S1 - Monaco Blue |

It is normal for a 931 with broken rings. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I would definetly add a small catch tank, they can be bought at every tuning store out there. But its a good idea to do leakdown and/or compression check.
Have the engine been run to operating temperature recently?, if you havent there could be moisture and petrol down in the oil (i fyou done test starts) _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Where is a good place to put an extra catchtank ?
I also have a valve cover with an extra breather outlet like the GTS, should this help ? _________________ 937 trackday car

There are so many oil leaking sources on these engines, I'm surprised they sold so many. Hence, and for other reasons, there are so many sitting in fields waiting for us to discover!
If you have deleted your A/C compressor, you can install your catch-can there. It's right below the stock plastic AOS system. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Consider installing a Provent air-oil separator on the car to help get rid of some of that oil. You can then recycle the collected oil by allowing it to gravity drain down back into the crankcase. These units were made for Diesel engines and have a lot of flow capacity and a built in pop off valve in the event your crankcase pressure goes too high.
I use these on the turbocharged 928s with great results. The 928s lift a lot of oil on boost, so it is a must there. |

Checked the compression this weekend, on all the cilinders it is vey good (and exactly the same).
There is some little moisture in the oil, maybe because i haven't used the car for a long time and started it for a few short times.
The headgaket is new and i have run iit for about 800 miles since. Should I retourque it? _________________ 937 trackday car
