HELP! My '80 2.0 is beginning to lose it's cooling fans. It's old...

My biggest problem is that I live in Vegas. And it's getting hot. Does anyone have a line on replacment cooling fans? Or any fan that could be substituted?

Robb

original fans are ridiculously priced.
I replaced mine with a multiblade fan from the local auto shop.
(mine fitted onto the cowling but not necessary)

Yep, measured the diameter of the stock can on my car and bought a Deraile from the FLAPS store.

I fitted mine to the stock shroud after trimming a little off the outer ring for the fan and building a slim spacer for the mount.

I've heard that one can adapt the 944 radiator and fans to the 924, which would provide some extra cooling capacity and better parts availability. I don't know what all is entailed though, but some searching here might get you the answers you're looking for.

Hope this helps!

Ideola has a threadnon adapting a 944 fan and Rad to a twofa

My car had a flexilite aftermatket one. Not certain how well it worked cause car wasn't running.

I lucked out at a pull a part place and got a dual fan OEM unit for my car.

The 944 replacement seems the best way to go to me, however I used this one from my local Autozone for the main fan. I think it was from a same year rabbit with A/C.

It's a bit taller than stock but it still fits.

Despite all the german type indications it had this sticker on it.

I work for Autopart International. The parts above are German made and the boxes are from China. I go through this once a week when parts come in from
Rock Auto or IMC.

I have a fan from a 95 jeep Cherokee on my 924 runs cool at 1/4.

Good to know. The fan seemed surprisingly well made for Mexico.

hi
i had the exact same problem with my 77 924
it had a single 4 blade fan (early rype)
it can be replaced directly (bolt on, no changes)with the 6 blade type from vw golf , vw jetta , and other vw's or Seat Ibiza, toledo or cordoba cars that use vw engines from the 70's 80's 90's they are all compatible although you must always use the 924 cowl.
be aware thet most 90's cars have dual speed fans (3 terminals) , you can hook up only the slow or the fast speed without changing the wiring.

Here's the writeup on that mod: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=36438

The other thing you should consider is getting the cooler range thermostat and fan switch combo, which will cause the fan to switch on earlier. See my cooling system kits here: http://garage.ideola.com/prod-CoolingSystemKits.html

I have done this on all of my cars despite the fact that I do not get heat in the winter as a result. I drive so infrequently in weather where heat is essential that it's worth the tradeoff. What I find with the stock heat range is that by the time the fan kicks in, it can be really hard for the car to overcome heat soak when the ambient temp is above 85 degrees or so...especially on a turbo. So I like having the fan come on earlier to avoid getting that point entirely.

Also, be aware that if your car doesn't have AC, the second fan will never kick in with stock wiring. On the Club Sport, I have wired in a separate switch and relay so I can manually control the second fan when extra cooling is desired.

Not sure I follow. . .temp switch should activate both with ignition on.

Here's my custom setup:

Not cheap, but fans are very efficient and quiet, and the assembly is much lighter than stock.

I don't think that is the case. On my cars with stock wiring, the fan on the LHS doesn't come on until the temp switch is triggered (after the T-stat opens up), but the second fan only comes on when the A/C switched is in the 1, 2, or 3 position. Cars without A/C don't even have the second fan.

Weird, mine both turn on via the temp switch with ignition on. . .factory harness. You might swap in a new fan relay and/or "AC Relay" and see if the behavior changes.

See Clark's for description of "early" system.
