I'm new to this forum stuff, i'm posting on the main board after a couple of private messages, maybe somebody has an idea what i'm missing... okay with the ignition off, the cam dot on the back of the gear is spot on with pointer, along with rotor on dist, pointing at the small groove on the ridge of dist. Under cap, triple checked wires are in the correct order and not crossed. The -0 mark on the flywheel is about 2 or 3 millimetres above the notch in the top inspection window, car starts after about three attempts, and will idle around 1,100 ish, but can't snap throttle, have to ease it like a shy puppy, otherwise it chokes out. When idling, there's a fair amount of clacking from near valve cover/exhaust manifold area, All ignition components are new and plugs are gapped, once its running i have zero vacuum at the dizzie, also there is no mark in the timing window and my strobe is intermittent i get about 20 good constant flashes then it starts to skip and the motor sounds like its missing then it starts to flash normal again and repeat the whole cycle all over again..... ugggggggh I'm so lost !!!! Pleeeeeeeeeeeease somebody help.

First of all, make sure that the cam sprocket is on the correct way. There is a shallow side and a deep side, the latter having the VW/Audi symbol and some other numbers on it. The deep side with the letters should face the windshield, and you should use the dimple on this side to align the timing mark at the cam cover.
Secondly, make sure you have the plug wires connected in the right order, that is, CLOCKWISE. So, with the ign rotor pointing at the #1 plug wire, go clock wise to the next lead on the cap and connect this to number 3; next one goes to number 4, and last one goes to number 2. If you have the plug wires installed 1-3-4-2 in COUNTERCLOCKWISE order, you will only run on two cylinders (1 & 4, and yes, it will run...poorly), but you will be flooding out and not firing on 3 & 2, which will be 180 degrees out of phase.
Once you've verified those first two items, the next thing I would do is verify condition of spark; first at the main coil wire, and then one at a time at each of the plug leads to make sure you don't have a bad wire or terminal on the ign dist cap.
If that checks out, then it is most likely that you have a massive vacuum leak somewhere. Start with the obvious: check the main boots and plastic plenum that connect the AFM to the Throttle Body. Then check all of the vac lines. Then finish by spraying starting fluid or water around the injector bungs in the head (starting fluid will cause a momentary race, water a momentary bog).
Once you have that all sorted out, the next step will be to check fuel delivery using this guide: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=35734 _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Also do a compression test with all plugs out.
The loud clacking you describe could be a blown head gasket. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Hey thanks, I yanked all the plugs, and I'm getting 155-160 across the board, I thought head gasket as well, ideola suggested I might have a serious vacuum leak, so I replaced that short tube off the bottom of the throttle body boot, that goes into that electrical valve type thing, facing the firewall...sorry don't have my Haynes in front of me, the name has escaped me.. That seemed to make a bit of difference, it's starts a lot easier now, but idles around 1,200, I tried before to play with the screw on the front of the T.B. had no effect, but maybe cause I had a vacuum leak????? I don't know, also now that it's running a bit better, I think that loud clatter could be exhaust leak, and for the record I'm gonna say I love all the help I'm getting on here, you guys are all fantastic!!! I'm glad I rescued all of these cars before they were all consumed by Mother Nature, all the cars listed in my sig. Were all in a swamp together and bought the whole pkg. fun fun fun, if anything else pops into your head, please let me know, I'll keep you posted, thanks again, cheers

I've been reading a few more posts by other members about the problems I'm experiencing, and just wondering if maybe it could be the warm up reg (WUR) and not my timing after all??... I tried using the ether starting fluid that ozzie suggested, and sprayed around the injectors and the intake boot and related hoses, and still no change, just a nasty headache from the ether.....uggggggh. Does anybody have any thoughts on it being the WUR, or anything else??? _________________ 85.5 gold 944, 77' black 924, 81' red 924 |

Hey, just wanted to post a big thanks to everyone on here that has been a huge help to me with my new projects, Ozzie, and ideola, thanks so much!!! Car idles quite nicely, and that clatter is about 95% gone, all vacuum leaks have been dealt with, along with fuel delivery, car actually drives !! Brakes need some attention as well the clutch....but this could be from the car being 70% submerged in a swamp, but all is well, as soon as I can figure out how to upload pics, I'll post a few before and after shots. I think I'll be parting out the 77' N/A 4speed.... It has some holes in the floor and the lower front control arm mount has rotted away. But still has a lot of great stuff on her. Anyways thanks again to all, I love this forum you guys are the best!!!!! Cheers _________________ 85.5 gold 944, 77' black 924, 81' red 924 |
