finally decided to bring the car to a known local porsche specialist.
The result is not very joyful
clutch needs to be replaced
oil pan leaks
head gasket leaks
I got quoted 600$ for the clutch kit and 800$ for installation
The guy basically advised me to find a 944 engine and tranny and to swap
Looking at the prices figures I'm actually considering a V8 swap done on the cheap.
meanwhile I would drive the 924 until the engine blows or the tranny explodes
what do you guys suggest? _________________ 1979 924 NA |

Stop driving the car until you fix it yourself, or can pay someone else to fix it.
Continuing to drive it till something totally breaks is going to drive the cost of repair up significantly.
Or, buy a Honda if you don't want to deal with repairs. |

Ouch. But, this is an engine pull to all that you need done. While yer at it, pull the pistons, check piston and bore specs, mic the crank journals, send the block out for honing, include the caps, etc. Replace the valve seals, blah, blah, blah. Most of the hard stuff a shop can do. You do the assembly and install. Not that hard. I personally think a V8 swap would be much more work and not really a good idea. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Hahahaha what? That's ridiculous. He must not realize the cost comparison of a 944 vs 924 clutch. 944 clutches cost more, and working on them is MORE expensive long term.
Do it yourself, save some bucks man. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

Seriously. Rent/borrow/buy a engine hoist and pull the engine. With a decent metric tool set, a jack, a set of jackstands and a hayne's manual, it should take a weekend to pull the motor, even for an inexperienced person.
A couple of nights to change the clutch, the oil pan gasket and the headgasket (price a clutch, headgasket set, timing belt/tensioner and an oil pan gasket from RockAuto or your local parts store)
Another weekend to put it back in the car, plus maybe another couple of nights sorting a few things here and there (replacing coolant/vacuum hoses, cleaning the engine bay and checking electrical connections are a good idea while the engine is out and accessible)
Swapping a 944 drivetrain into a 924 body isn't easy to do and most of the V8 swap kits won't work with the 924 body due to the differences in the crossmember. Also the torque tube shaft isn't really strong enough to handle that sort of abuse, so you'd have to swap that out for a 944 unit along with the transaxle, axles, shifter and possibly cut the old mounts off the torsion bar if you have a snailshell equipped car. _________________ Stefan
