Just out of curiosity. My car seems to have been ordered with very, very few options. But it does have the G31. Otherwise it is a very plain and mechanically simple 924.

Was the G31 marketed as a performance option, or a 5th gear "economy" plus for fuel mileage on the highway? Could you order the Audi 5 speed concurrently in 1979, meaning could you choose G31, or Audi 4 speed, or Audi 5 speed optionally?

Its actually my favorite feature of my car.

It was not an option. However, you do not have a G31, you have an 016Z. Only the turbos got the G31. The AUDI (016) transaxle was not ready until 1980. There was no optional or choice of transaxles except for the automatic.

The G31 was a much heavier duty version of the 016Z (or 016Y everywhere else)

For '79 it's not the G31 tranny which was only on 1980 931s, you have a similar tranny without the guts of the G31. Smaller diameter torque tube as well.

Ah ha. I see. So, was the 016y made by Audi or Porsche? What are the "heavy duty" internal differences in the G31? Are any parts exchangeable?

The G31 and 016Z/016Y are related to the 915 gearboxes used in 914's and early 911's. If you set the cases side by side and squint you can see see the family resemblance.

So you've got an Audi motor driving a Porsche gearbox.

After '80 it was all Audi drivetrain and before 79 it was also all Audi (4-speed box)

The 944's and 924S have a Porsche motor driving an Audi gearbox.

The Audi torque tubes aren't interchangeable with the dogleg or snailshell units. Also the Audi's came in two shaft sizes, just like the snailshells. So be aware of that if you're parts shopping/collecting.

Thanks!

Edit: just did a search and am starting to get the differences, of which there seem to be more than a few.

No performance aspirations for this car, just reliability, so all is good. Ill leave that to the 951.

Just have to order a set of Ideola's coupler bushings.

Thanks for the info, and not flaming me for the stupid question!

The performance with 95hp and 2300+lbs of car to move isn't going to amount to all that much (in a straight line) Just the facts of life, especially compared to the 951

Around the twisties and being able to maintain that speed (momentum conservation) is where the 924 shines in the hands of a good driver.

Just think of it in terms of a Volvo P1800 that handles better.

Oh and there aren't any stupid questions here, unless your name rhymes with "ishtar"

You can read about the transaxles in my article here. There are lots of pictures comparing internals of the Porsche design (G31/016Y/016Z) and the AUDI transaxles.
