| One of the studs on the exhaust manifold flang on the output side stripped almost clean. When I pulled the mani off I thought they looked kind of iffy now I'm wondering if there are options. |

Duck tape?
If the manifold is off, I can think of no option other than to replace the offending stud.
This is the job for Kroil.
If you don't know about Kroil, it's time... _________________ Race car: my favourite palindrome.

The manifold is not off. I'm not sure I could get the stud off if it was. |

Depending on which stud you may be able to get at it with a right angle drill attachment and then use an extractor or tig weld the nut on and remove with a spanner.
With many a scraped knuckle get the manifold off in situ and use a stud extractor or pull the head...
Id be doing the tig option if i had the room myself and loosening the engine mounts if i needed to get some extra room.

Pretty small stud to use an extractor on. If there is little to none sticking out it’s somewhat difficult to get enough weld there but possible since it will thermally wake up the connection.
In my early days of old Air cooled VWs I have had several studs break off. we would normally do this :
*grind it flat if it didn’t shear off flat ( so drill won't walk)..
*center punch on center.
*center drill.
*pilot drill smaller than tap drill, drill with tap drill.
*attempt to re-tap picking up existing threads.
If tapping is unsuccessful, there are stepped studs available as a worse case. Go to M8x1.25 with a stepped stud, Heli-coil is another option. Either way need to get drilling. You may need to use shortened drills with motor off its mounts to angle it for clearance or remove the head. _________________ Ken - ebay: wandrey1 , *0 , *00 , *01

Replace ALL manifold and turbo studs at every opportunity if the manifold is off. Is it off? I couldn't remove it with engine insitu. _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

| It's the studs on the flang side not the studs in the head. I used socket head bolts from Fastenal in the head. |

Mine snapped off. Let them and pull the manifold. Grind them flat and center punch them and start drilling them out to the proper size to tap them for new studs.
Reassemble with high temp anti-seize and new gaskets.
Or if like me and you find your exhaust manifold has cracked near the head, buy a header and solve the problem _________________ Stefan

| If I had the money I would have bought a header too. I emptied my auto fund and it's going to be empty for a few months now. |
