Well, I found one! By my title, I am saying it is the older gen, not an "S", which I have had before.

I really, really like it.

It is in pretty good shape. The original paint is Arizona sun-baked, but original. The interior is virtually flawless. There is a rip on a seam on the driver's seat bottom, but that's almost it. Everything else is quite nice. Carpet is a bit faded in back. It will be repainted original color and decals restored. Eventually.

Problems:

1. It does not have the fuel pressure accumulator installed, but the car came with a new Bosch one. Evidently the PO had difficulty sourcing one of the lines going to it. Car runs fine, but decides on it's own if it feels like starting when hot.

2.Horrid, improper offset aftermarket wheels with checked tires. I'm going to make them black until I can make them go away. I prefer the "tarantulas" with trim rings like a Sebring Edition would have.

3. A/C needs a charge. Haven't looked into whether it has been converted to R134a or not. I couldn't even find the low side service port. I can buy R12, I have a federal cert from working on aircraft, but I'd rather do a 134 conversion at some point.

4. It fortunately has the dogleg transaxle, but wow, is the shifting sloppy. I need to figure out why and correct that immediately, I am unfamiliar with that 2 rod system.

5. Battery tray leaks water into passenger compartment. Found that when cleaning leaves and dirt with the hose. Opps.

6. Rear bumper has one collapsed shock. So i'm "half Euro".

I'll be doing a lot of searching on this board, though I have had problems finding what I'm looking for.

It has a manual steering rack, manual windows, manual sunroof, a decent aftermarket steering wheel, and the awesome go-kart feel I love!

My other current Porsche is a track prepped 1988 951, which is fast, and stiff...racing buckets and harnesses are much harder to get in and out of. I want this car to be 100% Porsche, no mods at all, unlike the fire breathing 951.

The "Toofah" is going to make a fine daily driver!

In the following pics, I have done nothing but wash the dust off the engine with a garden hose. It is that clean, no oil leaks or anything. A (careful) degreasing should yield quite a pretty engine compartment, which I love.

Jeff

Oh, and did they just not put seat belts in the back seats in 1979?? I don't seem to have any!!! My youmgest will not be happy about that.

I have a set of belts from when I gutted the 951. I fear there are no attachment points.

Welcome! That is a beauty, I even like the wheels (which is hard to say as there aren't many modern 4-lug wheels that work on the 924 aesthetically, but too each their own) I'm pretty sure there was someone in the For Sale/Wanted section that was looking for a set of wheels for his 924, so you should be able to find a buyer fairly easily.

There should be lap belts in the back, they may have just fallen under the seats. I know my 79 has anchors in the back for lap belts.

On the shifting, bushings for the rear "knuckle"/U-joint are likely missing/destroyed. Same as the 914 used luckily. The repair isn't hard to accomplish just fiddly, I posted a how-to on it. Sometimes the bushings at the shifter go bad or the rod end for the second rod wears out and gets sloppy, but usually less often than the main U-joint at the front of the transaxle.

While you're repairing the shifter, fill the transaxle with some Redline MTL and make it a happy camper.

BTW, you know that car has more VW and Audi parts on it than Porsche parts, right?

A set of Euro bumpers, dropping it about an inch and losing the reflectors really makes the cars look the way they should have from the factory.

Finally, the 79 has the low compression US motor, so they take well to added intake pressure or you can look at adding compression with a thinner headgasket or Euro pistons to wake it up a bit. Just an FYI in case you need to dive into the engine anytime soon (knock on wood you don't)

Have fun and we love to see other toofah pics so don't hesitate to share so we can all live vicariously through you

Thanks very much. I will look into the shifter.

Maybe if I lower it and get some spacers to bring the read wheels out a bit I can live with them, but no hurry. I do plan on lowering it for sure.

Does that look like factory upholstery, or do you think it may have been redone? It just seems so nice for being so old.

Nobbi,

I believe they are made by TiC (wheels). They are like brand new. The steering wheel brand is "Personal".

My favorite aftermarket wheels for these cars are ATS Classic.

Cool ditch, you bought the silver one - had seen it on the local CL for awhile now. It looks really nice and original, should make a great platform for a DD.

BTW, I've still got a bunch of 924 parts that I need to get rid of. Acquired them while I was looking at two 924 cars local, but both fell through.

Yeah! I had been watching it for a while too. When they said "open to trades", I pounced like a kitten on a fuzz ball.

I think it's safe to say I'll take any parts you have, I like to hoard parts.

Looks like an original to me. Except perhaps the fabric door cards..? But maybe they were an option. Not one I recall seeing with that pattern. I've seen other types, though, like the tartan.

The interior looks factory herringbone to me.
As far as rear seatbelts there should be holes under the seat to mount seatbelts. (my late 931 has them) Also, on the top rear interior quarter there are big plugs that should cover a hole for a shoulder mount. (mine has those too) I take my kids everywhere with me and I really wanted a rear shoulder belt car so I came up with these belts from wescoperformance.

Yup, factory stock innards. My son's (formerly his mum's) '79 has the same, with matching door panels.

I'd be tempted to semi-gloss black the spokes and polish the lips, sort of a mock Fuchs look.

Be sure to install the missing air hose and snout for the alternator.
Without it (especially in your climate), the alternator bearings will cook in short order.

Rip out all the original seam sealer in the battery box and treat any rust that's started, before it gets too bad. Re-seal and paint it and you should be good to go for years.

Congrats on what looks to be a good find.

Great news, guys. Im glad the interior is original. Ill dig for those belts tonight.

Joemac, I saw that last night, I think I even have an old shopvac hose with a scoop that will be just the ticket. Thanks!

I wonder if I can freshen that paint at all, or if its too fargone.

I ha e a set of mille migalia cup2 replica wheels for an early offset 944 just sitting around, I should post them to trade for the tarantulas. Id trade straight across for them or the ones on the car you see here.
