Early offset 944 wheels (i.e. those <50mm offset, most in the 23mm range) will not work on the 924 setup, as they will stick out too far with or without spacers.

Don't understand this statement.

It depends if you are trying to fit the wheels with monstrous tyres or not. Pretty sure Cedric and myself are running 7'' ET23 wheels on our cars. In fact I'll be going from the temporary 10mm rear spacer to the OEM 21mm spacer soon to fill the arch better.

Fitting non standard wheels and tyres is more than just bolting up and thinking, shit it doesn't work! Tyres, ride height, cambers etc. can all be adjusted to work.

In fact 8 and 9'' wheels will work on a narrow 924/931 as long as you work at it.

Well, the suspension is already on there, so the simplest thing to do would try some negative camber ands see what happens. Also, you can get some 928 trashcans in 65mm offset i believe, bit then you may have issues on the inside rubbing.
I have 7x16 52mm offset trashcans on my 5lug 931 running 225's which was to me the best compromise of bigger wheels with no grief.

When I tried putting the standard issue 23mm cookie cutters on my 81 NA, the front wheels stuck out too far, about an inch beyond the fenders.

What I learned from that exercise is that the ET23 wheels will work in the rears if you remove the stock spacers, but then they appear a bit too inset, so some thinner spacers would ideal. If you leave the stock spacers on in the rear, they will rub the inner fender lip, especially with stock alignment settings and dampers. They will not work in the front without massive adjustments to camber, which may be great for the track, but will burn thru tires more quickly than most might prefer for the street.

I've got alu trailing arms and hubs from an 86' 944 and I've got 16x8" et11 wheels in the rear and 16x7 et 20 in front.

Here is how it looks

And I have just a mild stretch on the rear tires

That looks very nice. I like the mirror finish on the rims.

I am running into this issue right now with 15" cookie cutters. the rears look pretty good, but the front stick out about an inch. Was going to try a low profile tire to see how that looked. I am thinking that I just need to spring for some turbo twists and set up the car like raceboys white one.
