I have just replaced the timing belt and left the cover off cause I suspected the belt was rubbing on it due to wear marks on the old belt. I centered the belt on the cam pulley when I replaced it and after running it for a bit the belt has traveled towards the front of the engine and now overhangs the cam pulley about 1/16 ". I centered it again and it does the same thing. Could it be the tensioner is worn and causing the belt to travel? What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

Yeah it is the tension pulley. Get a new one and problem solved.

The tensioner pulley greatly regulates how far the belt is forward/back. If the pulley itself doesn't have weird play, make sure the crank pulley isn't having issues too. It's unlikely, and very likely the tensioner pulley. But it's always good to check clearances on stuff "while you're down there"...

Also, and this is purely anecdotal (my one and only experience, worked for me), you might not have the belt tight enough.

Well I just got around to changing the tensioner, haha. We moved to a farm and farm things took precedence.

I posted a few days ago about timing belt woes and was so zeroed in on why the car wouldn't start I forgot to mention that with the new tensioner the belt still does the same thing. It travels towards the front of the car and over hangs about 1/16 inch.

What clearances should I be looking at and what else if anything?

Thanks
