pulled of my puralator breather cup...was surprisingly clean. but the return line was a gunky looking mess. I want to flush it out because I think it may be the cause of the occassional cold start smoke. would it be cool to blast carb cleaner down the line? I would drain oil and leave the plug out and then let it continue to drain the gunk/carb cleaner into my drip pan via oil drain plug hole. thoughts comments suggestions??

Not thinking that's a good idea. Wouldn't that drain right into the crankcase? Have to believe there would be some oil/carb cleaner mix left in there when done and that doesn't bode well for lubrication.
Maybe remove the hose and take a bit of rag on a wire or coat hanger and pull it through then reattach... |

Maybe you can also remove the drain line from the oil pan to keep the crud and cleaner out of the pan? I dunno how accessible that is in situ, it might be impossible to get to. Just a thought. _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it. |

I poored some gasoline down the line and let the breather to soak. Then with a long metal pipe and hammer tapped the breather itself. Repeated this several times until I got bored and then drained the contaminated oil out. It was full of black nasty stuff and of course gasoline too.
Car was on jack stands with the front end lifted up. Poored some fresh oil trough the engine in order to rinse any gunk, in case it didn't come out in the first place. Because I felt this wasn't enough I filled the engine with some cheap oil and ran it on idle for a while. The drained the oil again but there wasn't any black crud there anymore. Just clean oil. So the rinsing method actually worked and would have been enough. _________________ Mikko

Well it still smokes a bit on a cold start up but I would say it is better now. Less smoke. Runs very strong and so it ran before so no change there. _________________ Mikko
