I've got a 1980 924na that had been sitting for 6 years. New fuel pumps and soft fuel lines and fuel filter. It started and ran! OK at full throttle but at the bottom end, it was staggering a bit.
I thought I'd take apart the fuel distributor and clean it...even after what I read here.
I took it apart and it is now clean as a whistle put it back in the car but only the starting injector got gas. I took another swing at the cleaning and went just a little farther into it. I popped the 4 little allen wrench headed caps off of the top and found another little allen wrench insert. Here is where I think I made a mistake. I took them out. They had a conical end and a little "O" ring. They had some crud on them and now they gleam. Of course, they probably are some sort of adjuster and I have now lost their original settings.
How big a problem have I created? _________________ 80 924 n/a

You have to buy a new fuel distributor, those are not serviceable..at least not by DIYers. Dont mess with the fuel distributor ever again...they are very rarely cloged(fuel filters do work)...and when they are..just buy a good one.
The staggering probably comes from poor mixture and spark advance settings or vacum leaks.. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I totally disagree. I rebuilt and sold a few distributors and they were great. Never had any issues rebuilding them. Biggest thing is to make sure the O-rings are properly sized and don't tear when it goes together. _________________ '80 924 Turbo - SOLD!

Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on an exploded view of an early '80s fuel distributor? _________________ 80 924 n/a

OK so maybe a few issues, but they only ever leaked if I made a mistake such as not getting on enough gasket Indian Head Gasket Shellac or had another hardware issue. It took me a few tries on some of them but I always got them done and working without any leaks. I had pictures of the rebuild on my stock one on here but those pictures and my personal website went bye-bye about a year ago and I didn't get a chance to save any of the pictures. Stupid divorce. |
|
I appreciate the info and the article is great. But on page 4 it shows a fuel distributor with just banjo-bolts and lines running off (presumably) to the injectors. Then on page 10 it shows more like what I have. The little adjusters set aside each banjo-bolt.
The article is silent about them.
I agree that I can get the distributor back in the car and I think I can do it without a leak. I'm just not sure how to set up those adjusters to get the car running. _________________ 80 924 n/a

Sorry, I don't know what those are. My car does not seem to have them. (82 turbo)
Is there a part number on it? Maybe this can help.

Right along side each banjo-bolt in your picture is a little allen head cap screw. If you back that out, it is just a cover for another allen wrench inset pin with a little O-ring. The end of the pin appears to reach down and limit the travel of the little hat ring at the end of the spring under the banjo-bolt.
How do I upload pictures? _________________ 80 924 n/a
