|
|
Hey folks.
In the midst of my resurrection of my poor old 931 I've noticed that several of the very nice interior pieces have bit the dust. The driver's side door panel is gone, there's a nasty rip in the passenger side panel where the speaker goes, the dash is in bad shape (tears, not cracks), and the rear seat padding/foam feels very lumpy.
My question is, how replaceable are these parts? Are there other VW cars of this era that use similar parts? Also, how does one refurbish the rear seats without destroying the foam that is glued under fabric/leather? _________________ Brian

I have a decent set of black door panels from an '81, the ones with the Porsche script. I have a set of 'pasha' door panels in great shape, with a dirty pasha rear seat to match. But, they are in Wisconsin and I'm in Arizona, for a bit~!
I'm also heading down to the local pick and pull this week to look at an '83 944. If it hasn't been torn apart, there might be some door cards available. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I'm not in a huge hurry to replace any parts at this point, I'm just gathering information. I'd hate to replace interior pieces only to wreck them again while I'm doing something inside the car trying to get it running again. It sounds like a lot of parts are exchangeable with the 944? What about the Scirocco or Audi 5000? Or even the VW Corrado? _________________ Brian

The early 944's used the same interior parts (with the exception of the trunk carpet as the width is different)
After 1985.5 the 944's changed the center console, dashboard and heater box, but I believe the rest of the parts from the doors back are interchangeable.
944's were built from the 924's, so the underpinnings/interior/chassis are from the 924, just updated slightly to accept the running changes they introduced in the 944. _________________ Stefan

The steering wheels swap. I suspect some of the electrical pieces (relays, switches, etc) do as well.
The front seats use the same mounting points as the 911's of the time. _________________ Stefan

Check out what I found at my local junk yard
There's a nearly pristine 70s era 924 at the Pick n Pull off Foster road (for all you Portlanders ) _________________ Brian

Nice find.
Seat upholstery kits aren't cheap though:

But if you don't want original, there seems to be no shortage of upholstery shops in SE Portland (seriously it seems there are three things in my area; upholstery, mini-marts and salons. It's a bit bizarre) _________________ Stefan

Automotion have kits, too. But Ideola's are cheaper.

Ah, great information. Think it is worth it to take these seats to one of these shops? Also, could they leather-wrap this Wolfsburg-style steering wheel? I'm not that interested in keeping the car OEM, though I don't plan on reupholstering the car using plastic like (most) modern cars are. _________________ Brian

Probably could. I've not investigated any of them, but there is one at the bottom of Johnson Creek Rd. that I drive by nearly everyday that I've seen some really nice custom cars/boats go through there. Figure they must know something.
I know that steering wheels can be pretty tricky to do.
Either way it will be a bunch of labor as the material is usually fairly cheap.
Here's some interesting info on interior repair:
