Alternator
I have a 1987 Porsche 924s that I have had for a few months when I got a flat tire and it sat for a month or two. Well I got the tire fixed and was ready to run and it wouldn’t start!!! The first thing I did was get the jeep and jump the Porsche, well it started up but sounded like it wasn’t getting enough electric. I took the cables off and it died slowly, so I put the cables on started the Porsche and left the jumper cables on for about 20 minutes, when I took them off again it ran for about 15 seconds and died again. I am thinking it’s the alternator, so I did some searching and read somewhere that the best place to get access to the alternator is under the passenger seat through an access door. Does anyone know if this is correct before I tare my seat out?
Thanks |

error, fault, mistake, wrongful, defect, flaw, incorrect, mistaken, default, failing, lapse, erroneous, misstep, floater, fluff, demerit, lapsus, boner
Alternator placed at three o'clock IIRC, the fan-thing attached to a belt.
When was the last time it got it's Front of Engine Service (FOES)?
That should be first on your list!
Welcome aboard!

And to answer your question, the alternator is at the front of the engine driven by one of the exposed belts, and is accessed by removing the undertray. _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic

Today I spoke to a porsche mecn who told me that the reason my 924 wont start isnt because my alternator is died, it could because my battery is so died that the alternator doesnt see it and wont charge to it. Has anyone else heaard of this?
Thanks for all your posts

Yes. Alternators won't charge a battery, only really maintain their charge. If the battery is dead, then you'll need to charge it with a real battery charger or you could damage the alternator. _________________ Stefan

|
|
Hello all,
Last night I switched batterys from my jeep to the porsche and it started right up, now as soon as I took the negitive cable off the battery it died. After that i figured it was my altanator and put the battery back into my jeep which after I tried to start the jeep, it started but you could tell that the porsche really drained it. So it looks like I am going after a new alternator tonight... |

If it wasn't the alternator, it most likely was as soon as you removed that cable with the motor running. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Removing the battery from a running engine with alternator removes the reference voltage, which the alternator uses to control the voltage output.
Without the reference voltage, the alternator's output voltage is uncontrolled, and it will self-destruct. |

This would have been a much more interesting post if you had torn your seat out and cut a hole in the floor before posting. _________________ 87 924s
