Being new to Porsche 924s and not a mechanic please have patience with my very basic questions. I have a 1978 924, do I have fuel injectors. Do you guys recommend Fuel Injector Cleaner Additives to the gasoline. If so what is the best. The car has 18.000 miles and has had most changable parts changed and runs good. My other question is would you change the tires since it has the original steel belted tires that look brand new except for a little cracking where the sidewall meets the tread.
Thanks, Jack

Buying Grandma's car that sat for many years, can be a can of worms. Once opened, suddenly, or gradually, nasty little things come forth. Seals that have sat for years in one spot suddenly spring a leak. Same with gaskets. I'd replace that water pump if still OEM. Standing water in the block will rust the impellar and shaft.

Running Techron or other fuel injection cleaner is a good idea. You have mechanical injectors btw. Gasoline varnish buildup in low mileage cars affect the CIS system as well. REPLACE those tires! Check the DOT date on the sidewall.

Grenadiers thanks for the information. I like to think positive that a low milage car will run perfectly and nothing will leak for a few years. I have only been on this site a week or two but it seams that every one with a 924 is constantly working on it to keep it running. Where are the stories of your 924 running great with no problems. What is the longest time period someone has driven a 924 without a major problem. Please, give me some hope.

Jack

Mudd,
I don't know if you consider this hope, but all cars suffer similar problems to what you read on this board. It's just that we don't spend gigabits and gigabits telling everyone how we DON"T have any problems. The beauty of this place is that between the several hundred folks around the world that regularly post here, probably all the problems have been discovered and fixes offered.
-The only car that ran well was my last one-I shouldn't have sold it- Hah!

Your car is 34 years old, 'nuff said~! Vintage P-cars need to be driven, and, the owner needs to allocate a certain number of dollars each year for maintenance. Dollars for the DIYer is best, dollars for a mechanic who won't understand a 34 year old car can get spendy.

Fifty, my son pointed out to me that if your car is running great you have no reason to post on here for help. I would just like to think there are thousands of 924 owners out there with trouble free cars just enjoying them.
Thanks guys

Get a not messed with car, use original or good quality parts to maintain it and the 924 will probably never break down.

Drove mine 3700km without a problem, this after it has been sitting for two years !

I think that the 924 is probably the most durable sports car out there - mine has 192 K miles and its been a daily driver for the last 16 years during the summer spring & fall.

That said, the cars like to be driven and it helps to know the engine and do the work yourself if you can. The engine was used in a wide variety of cars and most parts are very affordable.

Lastly, this is the best forum of its kind I've ever used - no pop-ups and a world-wide crew of helpful owners. Best of luck with a car that's virtually new by most of our standards! - Peter

We europeans have a little bit less complicated injection system, so I cant speek for that. But I used my 924 about 6000km/year incl a lot of trackdays very reliably. Just had to do some tuning since it had been in a garage for years, then it ran fine.

The 931 hasnt failed once on any track day or road driving. Most garage hours are because i want to (uppgrade/refreshing stuff). Not because i have to
