i've swapped (again) the front spindles and...i have no speedo on my 924.
i've been thinking and looking...the 944 turbo dial would be quite a nice addon (300km/h speedo)
what is the difference in diameter and mounting?
could one just replace the 924 mechanical dial with a 944 turbo unit?
i like the 944 dial because it has the same orange and if i'm not mistaken the fonts are the same...or very very similar.
i already have the S2 gearbox...so if the dial is independend and only needs voltage and signal from the gearbox....its only a matter of fitting it into the 924 dash.
anyone ever tried this? or anyone that can measure/compare with parts in hand?

side note: the tacho with the boost gauge would also be nice..

IIRC, the 44 turbo speedo uses a speed sensor on the tranny, not a cable like the toofah. Tacho might be a similar voltage inductive-thingie so that might be easier to adapt but I can't say for sure.

Can't say I've ever heard of someone doing this so I say go for it.

yea, i know, so i think all it needs is the signal from the gearbox and 12v to operate...however it is enclosed into a common box with the tacho and other instruments....i'll try to get a late model instrument cluster to mess with it.

If you fit the complete electronic speedo along with the speed ensor in the gear box than it will work. It will be inacurate but you can fix that with a speedo correction box.

Just fitting the face to the 924 mechanical speedo will no work. Think of it like this, if you run the speedo at 60km/h for 1 minute the odometer WILL NOT click over 1km. This is because the scale of the speedo face is different from the orignal.

Tachos work both the same principle (GND, +12v supply and signal), just the 924 tacho works with both low voltage signal (from the ECU) and high voltage signal from the ignition coil. Late tachos work only with low voltage signal.

I solved the speedo issue by drilling the hole for the cable and it worked well.

Morghen, if you remove the 944 speedo from the binnacle, I think it's just the face and the bare meter unit, not in a tin can like the 924 speedo. You'll have to figure out how to mount it in the 924 dash.

Also (it might only be UK models) the 944 speedo signal from the transaxle goes through a 'frequency unit' in the relay box. I don't really know what this does, but it might be important...

Edit: of course, you could pull the whole dash out and fit a complete 944 oval dash (and centre console)...

i was thinking of removing the 944 speedo face and parts needed for the speedo and then transplanting it to the 924 can if there is enough space in the 924 can and they are the same diameter.

the frequency unit sounds like a problem...

when in Karlsruhe i'll get two speedos (924 and 944) to play with.

I think it might work , the speedo seems to be a self contained unit , it has a 4 pin setup for power and signal.
Diameter is 93mm and depth is 60mm.

If you bring a spare 924 speedo with you maybe we can test fit the housing when we meet.
What diameter is the 924 unit ?

PS: If you run the wires from the gearbox sensor before you leave we could even try hooking it up.

The 944 gauges are slightly larger than the 924's.

They won't fit in the can without trimming the face down. The red circle shows the size of the 924 can. It will have to be cut even smaller than that for the back-lighting to illuminate the face at night, though.

After that, you have another issue. The ring/bezel that surrounds the 924 gauge covers up some of the 944 face. This is white circle. By the time you're done, about the only thing you'll see is the numbers.

I never tried to but swap the electronics, but it didn't look like it would work.

if you bought a nice 944 turbo it would save you all the headache and work of trying to turn a 924 into one. All you guys putting 951 stuff on your 931s' and 924s' could just buy a 951 and put 924 quarters on it and save a hell of alot of work.
