I'm thinking about an 82 931 that is for sale with the problem being the fuel cuts out around 2500 rpm. Another 931 I looked at a year ago also had a similar problem. Has anyone run into this before?

It sounds more like an electronic problem. The fuel pump relay needs an ignition signal or the fuel pump will be cut off. Possible areas include:

1. Defective overboost switch
2. Corroded/bad connections at the DITC computer, ignition module or fuel pump relay.

Thanks!

I talked to the seller again (I haven't seen the car in person yet) and what it's actually doing is leaning out significantly around 2500 rpm. Not its backfiring and stuff when it gets there rater than just cutting out all the way.

Since it is leaning out, I would guess there is partial clogging of the fuel system. If the car has sat a long time, running a good fuel system cleaner through it would help. If that doesn't help, a reading of the system and control pressures should be measured to help pinpoint the problem.
