Yep. I know that whatever I spent on my cars I won't get back. I spent two or three times the buying price on my 944 and I basically got the same price of what I bought it for. I'm happy with my cars, I love my cars and they're an investment in my happiness, but I know no one will pay me for what I spent on them.
I guess my sanity is worth the cost of maintenance
I don't think anyone would want my toofah but me (unless I become famous, and let's face it, I'm just not good looking enough for that). So I'm fine with that. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

OT: But yeah, I reckon so. Back'o the napkin calc's and some real-world experience say it's well in excess of twenty grand to rebuild one of these things to better-than-new (and in race trim at that), with all the right bits. Just ask our original poster...
My two cents on buying someone elses? If you're happy with the car, it is far and away the cheapest option. And not at all a bad one. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

The true value of your car will come from driving it. A Sunday morning on a winding road on a brisk day ... That memory will have value and is the pay-off for your hard work.
The 924 is the most under-valued sports car ever made. It's reliable, durable, and good handling. I'm a teacher and my students covet my car but they don't have any $. I bought my 924 for $3500 and have driven it for 15 years. I love the car as many on this forum do. We're not Jay Lennos or high-end collectors. We are pleased that we can own a Porsche, enjoy driving them, hope that they increase in value, and wish you well in selling if that is what you really want to do. - Peter |

After with the 968!
I'm sorry, Doodle, but I'm with Khal.
With decent 968s (over here at any rate...) scratching to make £5000, even the best 924 isn't going to clear £2000 (genuine Carrera GTs excepted...)
Yes, you've done a splendid job restoring (and improving) your car; well done! But an investment? - Not in this universe...! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Did a rough calculation, closing in on 27K euros "invested" into my red 924.
This last year i dropped +5K euros into brakes, suspension, gts turbo, rebuilt/improved head.
luckly for me europe is a good market for 924 turbos and perhaps i can dream of getting half of that for the car.
but US...pfffff...people just dont want to pay for these cars
UK is about the same story...why? dont really know.. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Don't be so hasty! Maybe he should ship it to Europe? Reckon top of their shopping list is a slightly uglier, completely un-original red-headed step-child from the wilds of Bum-F*** Nowhere?

Yeah, I doubt it, Nobbi.
(How'dya like that trashing? Sorry, just looking at it from the other side.) _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

The New World versions have zits and buck teeth, hence the "uglier". He's mod'd it, hence the un-original. And The Island is... well... just that. One of the little islands off the West coast of said New World.
I was trying to be humorous. I do own several of these things and love 'em to death _________________ '80 924 Turbo

| Grenadiers wrote: | Was thinking about this post the other day. I put the black '81 turbo car out in front of our restaurant for two weekends. Other than a couple kids wanting the keys, not, only had one older gentleman actually ask about it. Lowered the price to 4200 dollars for the second weekend, no bites. We serve about 650 people a weekend. Lots of people that own toys, cars, vintage stuff know of my Porsche hobby here. Not a bite.
Even my Craigslist ad over a two week period or so didn't even garner the usual scams! Hmpf! Plenty of hours and parts went into this car, and I think the 4200 is a fair price. So, unless the car is in the 2000 dollar range, most likely it's going to sit, here! Not that many 944's for sale in the area either, so not sure of the lack of interest. |
I just saw that Craigslist this evening and figured that must be the Nelson, WI guy from the 924 board. Have you thought about throwing in a few artisan pizzas? Another question, does driving down to the Stone Barn in a 924 get you a complimentary beer or anything? |

Honestly it's a huge mentality thing. People see something cheap and expect it to be cheap thereafter. "it's only a 944..." or "it's only a 924..." is something I have heard people say and they have no idea what it's like to keep up on and maintain the damn things. The 924 and 944 scene here is small. There is this odd crowd who loves them and sticks in these little groups, I usually find them in local PCA places and they take care of them and they do keep up the cars.
Then there is the "majority factor" - this odd group that buys the cars because they are inexpensive. Then they have this idea that it will be an inexpensive Porsche. They take shortcuts and treat the cars like total crap, then when things break they try and rig it instead of fixing it right. The car eventually gets driven into the ground and goes to hell and back and finds the way to the junkyard where it becomes a parts car. These are usually the types that buy cars on the cheap, cheaply maintain them, see the opportunity to buy a Porsche on the cheap and think it's a dream come true and have no idea what they're getting into.
I see it far more often than I would like to unfortunately.
The few that are nice are usually bought up by Porschephiles who love them to death and they don't sell them and I hardly see the nice ones on the road. Then now and then the crap ones you'll see once or twice, then it ends up on craigslist as a parts car. It's a real shame.
In a perfect world who wouldn't want to buy a Porsche for a few thousand dollars and not have to spend hardly anything in maintenance on it? That sure would be cool! But that isn't how it works. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)
