Hi, Targa Rotorua is on again this weekend, and we'll be there flying the flag for 924s again
Doing a few final checks on the car today, followed by wheel allignment on Wednesday morning and then we drive down on Friday.
The event covers almost 1000km over 2 days, and has 389km of closed special stages. It's going to be great to have J1NX3D back on the service crew again for this one too - hopefully he won't have too much work to do.
There should be a link to live results on www.targa.co.nz _________________ Andrew

I'll leave Andrew to do the write up but happy to say both cars finished with very little fuss.

We had a great time, and amazingly the 924 didn’t miss a beat all weekend! 1500km round trip, and all the crew had to do was top up the fuel and oil. 7 years of rallying and this is the first trouble free one – what a great feeling.
The crew were a bit bored, but luckily the little Peugeot kept them busy, bursting a high pressure power steering hose at the end of stage 4, just before lunch. The team work was amazing, and they had it all sorted in time so that Bron didn’t miss a stage – our crew is brilliant. J1NX3D will have to tell you that story though, as we were out on the next stage.
Now for the rally report:
We’d spent a bit of time setting up the car to suit the new Federal RS-R control tyre (after all the problems with them in the last rally), and were very happy with the balance on the trip down to Rotorua. I was pleased to wake to a wet morning on Saturday, as that usually suits the 924 down to the ground. The first stage was a disaster though, with several spins and absolutely no grip. The next three stages didn’t get any better, with so many close calls and no confidence left. The federal guys had been at the end of one of the stages checking tyre temps, so I went and spoke to them at lunch time. They reckoned I needed to get the temp up 6 degrees, and that I should raise my tyre pressures by 2psi to achieve that. It worked and I gradually started getting my confidence back, ready to attack the next morning, although by that stage we were well out of the running.
Sunday started well, and I really enjoyed driving the car again, both wet and dry. It was nice catching other cars instead of being caught like the day before. We even caught and passed a Group B RX7 on a couple of stages, and beat them on all but one stage for the day. Our main competition for the day was a pair of BMW 320i’s, and we seemed to be trading times all day, although we’d lost so much time the first day that we were several minutes off their total rally time. The last stage had a real mix of surfaces and conditions, and we had a great battle with a MKII escort after passing them about 20kms into the stage under the wettest conditions we’d had all weekend. 500m on and it was bone dry and we couldn’t shake them for the rest of the 40km stage. We both had the biggest smiles you’ve ever seen at the end of the stage
Bron did really well too, and was pushing very hard on the second day once her pressures were adjusted. I was really proud that she finished every stage, after only managing half of them last year due to health issues. We certainly did our bit to raise awareness of Breast cancer this weekend, and J1NX3D looked stunning in the bright pink beanie – I’m sure he must have a picture somewhere _________________ Andrew

I forgot to mention the cow incident!!
We were thrashing it along an open country road on stage 5, which went up a steep hill after a bit of a straight. The top of the hill had trees either side, so there were lots of shadows, and nothing was terribly clear until we got pretty close. As we got close to the top of the hill I lifted off in amazement - there in the middle of the road was a very big, very angry cow!! We slowed right down to about 80, and as we did the cow moved over to the left hand lane. Great I though, I could slowly cruise past without spooking him and not loose much time. The cow had different ideas though, and it was obviously very cunning (this must be the reason our dairy products are so popular around the world ). After luring us into a false sense of security the gigantic cow charged at us as we were passing, and must have only missed by millimeters. I've never pushed the pedal to the floor as hard before in my life!!
We later found out that it had actually got the beautiful orange Torana hatch a couple of cars back and forced it off the road, causing some major damage. We were so lucky that it didn't get us too. _________________ Andrew
