So, me'n my mate bought a racecar! Well, what will become a racecar, at least.
It's an '80 924 Turbo with the M471 option and it has a snailshell. Unlikely that it has an L.S.D. but you can't win 'em all.
It has been repainted at some point but appears to be the original colour and the paint job is surprisingly tidy. In fact, the body appears to be amazingly straight, no real dings or scrapes to speak of.
The interior is completely shot. I mean biohazard-suit-for-removal shot. But it'll be a racecar, so who cares?
The original engine is out (in the trunk!) but it seems to be largely complete and fortuitously, it came with a spare, mostly complete engine to boot!
No illusions, it needs a LOT of work. However it's probably about as good a base to start with as any. Especially considering it cost the grand sum of $500 for the lot!
The vague plan is to race the with the local Vintage Racing Club, run the Targa Canada West, with an ultimate goal of Targa Newfoundland.
So, we'll be about looking for advice and asking tech. questions and such. And scrounging for parts! On the subject of parts, we were given what appears to be unused, or at least very lightly used, S1 exhaust manifold that is in as perfect condition as we've ever seen. Strange little oddities that pop up sometimes...
Looking forward to a grand adventure!
As she sits...

thats a great deal, its actually a steal !
not sure if it deserves to be stripped into a race car or restored.
it would be fairly easy to source a good interior...and the engine you're going to sort out anyway...
good undamaged unmolested bodyed 924s are hard to find these days..
anyways, i trust you'll take good care of it...as it looks like a great base for a great project.
good luck ! _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Go Canada! Fun to have someone else help on a project, usually requires massive quantities of beer! (I have a friend in thunder bay, ON, we never get out of his garage). _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Ask away when you need info on setup for Targa. Kelly from Targa Canada West will be able to help you with advice too, as he has run a 924S in NZ targa events. I see he has a picture of my mate Terry's 924 from NZ on his website too _________________ Andrew

Please check right away on the LSD!!! With those flat dish wheels and the M471 option, there's a really good chance it has LSD. Very interested to know...looks like you might have found one of the fabled "931 S" models! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I am waiting to hear back from the car I found. If there is an extra bit or two that we can swap, let me know.

As Dan said, you might have an LSD. My '79 NA had the S decal, M471 and LSD (It is white also).

Great going Khal! She looks like a beauty. Are you going to trailer it to events?
I have committed to getting my beast over here to race. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

The plan at the moment is to keep it street legal. But I'm not 100% sure if some of the planned mod's are actually street legal over here, the full cage being an example. Still, it seems you can get away with a lot more than you'd be allowed in Oz.

A worthy goal. And maybe more feasible in the U.S. But I researched it quite a bit between Oz and here, and, as you would expect, shipping/importing pretty much kills the deal. By the time I'd jumped through all their hoops, I reckoned on six grand... at least!
Considering we got our little project here for five hundred, that leaves at least five-and-a-half grand to start playing with. You can do a fair bit up here for five-and-a-half grand... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Do some research on the Rat Race enduro series at Oregon Raceway Park. You might see something worth the trip. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Is there an import tax for a car which is not to be used on the road? I'd be picking it up on a trailer. I have about $3k figured to get it over here. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

I'm not sure. Certainly have no clue about the U.S.
What I can tell you is that I was quoted massively varying figures, from US$1,900 up to AUD$4,000-ish. It all seemed to hinge on exactly what they included in their quote. As an example, that US$1,900 quote, the lowest I was given, was actually only the price of the "seat", for want of a better description. It did not include transport, loading and port fees and/or taxes at either end of the journey, which, between good ol' wallet-rapist Oz and its wannabe Commonwealth brother Canuckia, more than doubled the price.
And for me it was a very manual process. No one company seemed to have any clue as to how exactly you got a car from Brisbane to Vancouver, nor what the exact charges were at each end. If I wasn't such a trusting fellow I'd think they were deliberately obfuscating to sucker me into having to pay whatever number they stuck on the bill at the end of the day
Beware.
As an amusing side note, in the latest episodes of Wheeler Dealers they transport several cars from California to England. Shipping prices range a bit but seem to be £2,500 plus-or-minus a couple of hundred, about four grand in Oz pesos... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
