A 944S came with 2.7 litre engine, however this was later than 1983. It replaced the 2.5 litre 16 valve ventilier, which replaced the 2.5 litre 8 valve. The later 944S2 came with a 3.0 litre engine. All said off the top of my head and may be wrong of course.
There were continual trim, brake and suspension upgrades during each step of the 944 evolution.

Sometimes there is a reference to an early 924 being an "S". I wonder if this might be similar. IIRC the reason for the "S" reference it was M471 optioned car but a) I'm not sure about that, and b) I'm not sure whether that even applies in your case. Mebbe a clue though. See if the build sheet had M471 option on it.

There was also the aforementioned S and S2 BADGED versions of the 44. They're much more clearcut regarding years and features. Well known. Also, the 924S was 86-87-88 in USA. Also well known.

Or the PO could be making it up...

The option codes between the tail lights might shed some light. . .there were a few performance oriented options.

M220 - LSD
M404 - Front and rear ARB
M409/410 - Sport seats
M474 - Sport shocks

That car in the picture is a normal 2.5 8 valve model = basic 944. There is no other 944 S model other than the 944 S.

944 S = 2.5 16V

edit: 944 S was in production from 1987 to 1988

If you want to replace the "S" badge, I have a "Turbo" badge from a 951. I mean if you want to upgrade from an "S".
