Hi all--

I'm trying and failing to find a rebuilt caliper for my 77 with rear drums. Advice? I've tried a couple parts houses with no luck, and ebay doesn't have em either right now. I need to find them today/ tomorrow so I can get this on the road saturday.

1. Anyone know of a place that stcoks them?

2. Anyone know if this caliper was used on another VW/ Audi/ Porsche product?

3. Both of my calipers seized on the bleeders and they snapped off. Anyone tried over drilling and tapping for a new bleeder screw before? That may be my fallback option.

Thanks,
Brendan[/quote]

I had one bleeder on the rear drum snap off. After a lot of worrying I went to the hardware store and bought about the smallest EZ out I could get. First soaked it well with penetrating oil, tapped the EZ out in with a small hammer and it came out without a fuss, no drilling required. Pelican has new bleeder screws for about $3-5 each

Found some. I went to Centric and found their part number and searched that. I found a couple vendors that have them.

Centric seems to be the only mfr that puts dimensional information on their parts on the website. Checking the dimensions (bore size in particular) is the only way to confirm that the calipers match the drum rear/ Non-sport package.

Gah!

After all that-- both places have them on backorder, with no anticipated restock.

Any other ideas on where I can find calipers?

I did find these:

http://www.amazon.com/Thexton-Brake-Bleeder-Repair-563-CARD/dp/B0012TYTMI

which are a brilliant idea, and are my fallback plan.

If you stop calling them calipers and called them cylinders you might have better luck.

Ah, that could have been clearer. I guess I could have said 'front calipers'.

I'm looking for calipers for a car that has rear drums. Obviously, there are no calipers on drum brakes. The cars with rear drums have a different 'front' caliper than those with the 4 wheel discs, so the sentence does make sense.

I assumed everyone would get this.

Wait, are the front calipers different over the run of the 924?

Aside, from the 4-wheel disc cars, I thought they would be the same parts?

Have you tried RockAuto.com or autohausaz?

Edit: they are the same and RockAuto has them loaded for $31.79/ea.

I'm surprised that doesn't cross to a VW super beetle or rabbit (ROW Golf) part.

Great time to ditch the whole setup and upgrade to four wheel vented discs.

+1 to the above.

Also, the rear wheel cylinders for the 4 lug can be "had" if you want to swap both. The late beetle has a slightly larger inner bore, if you replace both rear cylinders to keep the bore size the same you can buy rebuilt units from any VW shop. They were like $5 each; not worth the time with an EZ-out.

OK--

I found 2 on Ebay, finally. They're both for the same side, but whatever, they'll fit.

I would love to go to 944 suspension, but I'm moving on 8/27, and no time for that now. Obviously, it needs to be in the works, though because these parts for the earliest of the 924s are disappearing.

I'm also surprised that it doesn't cross to a VW or Audi part. I searched to no avail, but that doesn't mean it's not the case.

I did find one unit on Ebay that was the caliper 'ram' only, no bracketry, for VW Fox/ Audi 100 that looked like it would match the early 924. It seemed to have the groove for the funky spring clip that wraps around the ram. If it's still around in a couple weeks I may buy it just to find out.

Now--

They are available rebuilt. I placed an order with Automobile Atlanta for the calipers and they backordered me. I figured this was going to be an indefinte term backorder so I cancelled it, but it turns out that they CAN get them from Centric, but they don't stock them and it takes about 2 weeks to get them from Centric.

After 2 weeks of searching for these damn things, Automobile Atlanta seems to be the only retailer that can get them. I'm sure that's not entirely true, but they'll be my first call next time.
