|
|
Anyone have any experience tinting the rear hatch on a 924? I have tinted windows before, but never a hatch. I'm guessing ill have to use strips of tint and remove the hatch and lay it on the floor. I'm going to limo black the white beast and possibly others as long as I can do a good job on the hatch. _________________ 87 924s

One of the Arizona cars I picked up last year has hatch tint. As I recall, (car is in WI,) looked like it was applied horizontally, and it is now delaminating.
Found a pic of it:

I also have a car with tint on the rear hatch. It is a 944 and the tint was also laid in long thin strips and is coming off. Question is, do you buy a kit with the strips, or do you cut them yourself? I don't think I want to try to cut lines that straight. _________________ 87 924s

I used a large stipe (24 in or so) in the center and finish both sides (the curve parts) with vertical pre-cut narrow stripe (around 6 in).
Not a professional result but not too bad. _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

if you take it to a good professional tinter, they can do it with one piece, and it won't look like crap... _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

Even professionals have a hard time with 1 big piece. Most will do it with 2 large pieces and you'll never be able to tell where the seam is. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

The 944 hatch I have was done in very narrow strips. They were only 4 to 6 inches wide and the seams met at the window defroster lines to hide them. Just wondered if there were places you could buy it by the ribbon. _________________ 87 924s

Do an interweb search for instructions. I was looking at some some years ago. A few vague details I recall - they used clothes dryer anti-static sheets to lube the window (some fine powder or something comes off the sheets to lube it). Then layed large sections of tint on top of the hatch (with the removable backing face-up), scotch-taped in a few places. -Then used a hair drier or heat gun just right, to cause the tint to conform to the shape of the hatch. Then of course let it cool, remove the backing and stick it on the inside of the glass.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

that sounds like way too much work. I want to protect my interior from the sun, but I dont want a crappy looking bubble-tint job. I might just spray the stupid thing black from the inside. I have spare hatches, what the heck. _________________ 87 924s

if your really gonna try using paint,(not a bad idea at all) use a purple or blue pearl paint. its clear, you have to use a base coat to make it opake.youll make the window dark and still be able to see out of it. you have lots of hatches try it!!you could use red i\or yellow even green pearls. come on try it im gonna try it to.after you do!! "edit" im not sure about 1to 1 car paints,im talking modelcar paint like testors or modlehouse spray paint in a rattle can. _________________ Doco "where am i going and why am i in this handbasket"author unknown

They actually do make spray on tint, but it looks like crap in my opinion. Get it done in one piece, it makes a HUGE difference in how it looks. A crappy tint job looks worse than leaving it clear. Any good professional will be able to do it in one piece. I used to do mid 80's F-bodys with no issues at all using a heat gun to shape the piece as Smoothie described before. It's really rather easy in theory, just harder in practice if you've never done it before.
