Ok so this summer I'd really like to have my car back on the road. I have a few questions before though. Last year when my father and I took the car out of the storage a wire from the ignition, or around there, caught fire (we fixed it) . I was wondering what could have caused that? I've had my alternator rebuilt, the guy tested it and says it works fine, but the car tells me differently. Could it be that the problem with it is intermittent? Also last summer before putting it back in storage, it wouldn't start at all. It seems that the alternator is draining power from the battery, or the battery could be dead?

Thanks

Your problem is probably a common one:
The defective starter/alternator wiring harness.
Look into replacing >> rebuilding that part of the harness completely.

The wiring harness between battery and alternator/starter wears quickly
by a combination of heat from the outlet manifold and water mixed with
(very possibly) battery acid that eats through the protective sheath;
It made my main wire in that harness rust from the inside out…

While you are busy replacing wires another idea would be to replace the Ignition
Starter Switch (Steering column) so the starter will get sufficient power.
The old one will probably be wornout and cracked.

Also helpfull was the “How-To: diagnose electrical problems part one”

Thank you We have replaced the Ignition Starter Switch last year. Although the old one look good. We will be looking at the wiring harness between the battery and alternator/starter.
