Any suggestions? I'd like it very close to town, if possible.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area Lakeshore Scenic Drive
http://www.nps.gov/lake/planyourvisit/driving.htm

Start off at Boulder City (after visiting the Hoover Dam, if you'd like). I would recommend taking it all the way up to Valley of Fire State Park...not so much for the driving once you get to the park, but it's a great destination and very scenic. The road itself is very twisty with lots of elevation changes. However, you do have to be a little careful because it may be periodically patrolled by the NPS, and there may be slower traffic about on the roads. But it's a very enjoyable drive regardless.

Here's google map. I even did a write up on it in the Cool Drives section a little while ago: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=26348

Head out of town past the airbase and racetrack then aim for area 51. Do it at night and keep flashing your lights and blowing your horn.

Area 51 is an interesting spot to at least drive by.

Highway 318 is where they hold the Silver State Classic Open Road Race:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Highway+318,+Hiko,+NV&aq=&sll=36.328403,-115.015869&sspn=3.106515,4.938354&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Nevada+318,+Hiko,+Lincoln,+Nevada+89017&ll=37.350509,-114.955444&spn=1.532703,2.469177&t=h&z=9&iwloc=A

Otherwise, it seemed like most of the more interesting roads were further up north near Tonopah or even Winnemucca.

There are no flogging roads in vegas... What you want to do for
some great flogging roads is head to Texas. Yea hit San Antonio.. then
go to El Paso.. hang a right and youll see the signs. Thas what the bunny from the hat told me.

I can highly recommend the route between Lee Vining CA (near the famous Mono Lake with its characteristic tufa towers) and Tonopah NV. Google map. Don't let the map fool you. That road is very twisty and constant elevation changes, up and down up and down up and down. But at 3.75 hours away, Tonopah is not exactly close to Vegas...

There's not a lot of twisties, but if you're seeking more isolated roadways, it doesn't get much more isolated than Mojave National Preserve, just an hour south of Vegas. There's a great little B&B in the tiny town of Nipton. The cook smokes pot. He served up the best pork chop and corona I ever had. The road through the preserve between Nipton & Goffs is probably the best in the area.

I can rent a 987 at a hilarious little place across from the hotel for five hours. . .Dan's first suggestion looks like it might be just the ticket.

If you are willing to travel down to my neck of the woods, the old Route 66/ Oatman highway has a bunch of twisties, but it's narrow and two lane, so it's not too fast. It's about 1 1/2 hours southeast of Vegas. I'd even meet you at the Oatman Hotel for lunch...maybe a Buffalo burger and a beer! Quirky little old mining town with wild burros walking the streets. The trip from Oatman to Cool Springs is the twistiest, and if your're into the Rolling Stones at all, the guy at Cool Springs has a pretty impressive Stones record collection...lots of signed stuff! Cool Springs is an old gas station (I think from the 20's or 30's) that has been restored and converted to a gift shop type of place. Neat scenary too, but one thing you can't let get to you is the wreck of a pick up truck that went off one of the cliffs years ago near the gold mine!

When are you coming out?
