I am sure someone here knows, will a 4.5 ltr V-8 from a 928 fit into a 924 ?

I'll say it like it was told to me wheb I first got into car about 15 years ago, any engine will fit any car you have the tools and want it bad enough! If you just want a v8 924 you are far better off with a GM Ls engine it is lighter, makes more power and is far less expensive on parts!

Not directly. It will apparently fit between the frame rails as the 924 is slightly wider there than the 928.

Bellhousing is different and the 928 has the clutch mounted in the rear.

You could use the complete 928 drivetrain and adapt it to fit.

Or

It does appear that the 928's bellhousing could bolt up to the 944/931 TT, but you'll need to build a custom clutch solution with perhaps a hydraulic throw out bearing in order to fit it all in the 928 housing.

Motor mounts would be custom, as would the exhaust.

an Audi V8 is actually closer to the 924 bellhousing and the clutch is easier to sort out.

Still custom mounts, exhaust, etc.

I have a friend that is a 944 nut......I asked him this question and he told me the 928 block is a wide V to make the motor sit low. This makes the motor wider....too wide to easily drop into the 924/944. This is why guys use the Chevy V8......which is a narrow V8.

I'm sure it could be done....but it would be very difficult.

But to have a 944 with a 928 drivetrain would be the ultimate car at a car show if done right.

Just wondering if it would be an easy or hard swap. Have a chance to get a running 4.5 ltr from a 928 pretty cheap. Still trying to figure out what I wanna do with this 931.

Hard.

The major challenges, as discussed elsewhere on the board:
- fitment between shock towers
- front-to-back fitment / position of radiator
- will require relocating the brake booster
- bell housing & torque tube arrangement

The 4.5L is the least desirable of the 928 motors, especially if it's US-spec. For the effort and money you would spend to do all of the above, you could completely rebuild and modify a 931 motor and achieve more power.

Yah.....the early 928 motors don't produce much power......but they sure are a pretty engine. I've pondered buying an early 928 simply because I love the look of the motor.

The rabbit in the pic is 20cm wider then normal. It was cut in half and then welded back together.Dont think it is worth it.

The 924 engines is mounted at a very big angle...i think the 928 engine is at most that inclined. so..between the rails and the towers...no problem.
I've been tinkering with the idea of a cayenne V8 inside a 924.

The biggest problem that i see is that the brake cyl and the servo brake pot is in the way and you'd have to move that.
