|
|
I bought my 924 from a guy but with only a bill of sale. My state requires a proper title for me to register the car. So far here are the options I've come up with.
- I found an out of state titling service but they charge $400 for a new title and takes 2-6 weeks. getnewtitle.com
- I can go through the court system to claim ownership but that could take months or years.
- I can find a donor shell for cheap with title and swap over drivetrain etc.
- I've also tried thinking of other cars that would be fun to drop the drivetrain in as a conversion but didn't come up with much. |

I went through this crap with a 924 a couple years ago. I actually had a title, but it wasn't a current title. The person I got it from had lost it and requested a new one, but must have found the old one and sold it with that instead of the new one. Bastard wouldn't return my calls and I ended up just selling the car at a huge loss as a parts car just to get it out of my garage.
Unless the car is worth more to you than you'd spend getting a title for it, I'd just dump the thing. _________________ 1980 924 (for sale)

If it's anything like Minnesota (and that form is a lot like the Minnesota form), you need to be the registered owner of the vehicle to request a duplicate title. Otherwise there's pretty much nothing keeping somebody from transferring it into their name without the actual owner's consent.
Of course, there are also states that don't even do titles on cars this old. Seems pretty stupid. _________________ 1980 924 (for sale)

Speak to your local police. the chief where I live (media area) got my friend hooked up with a title for his beetle for like $60, iirc. It helps if it hasn't been titled in 10 years. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

Response #2 is highly effective, but highly illegal, therefore we shall speak of it no more on an open forum.
First, go to DMV with the VIN#, do a title search to find who is the current owner of record. Then attempt to contact that owner and see if he will agree to meet you at the DMV office to have him fill out a duplicate title form, then have him sign the title over to you.
Worked for me for a parts car I bought a few years ago. The PPO was happy to hear I was gonna put the car back on the road. |

If you can't contact the PO, put a lein on the title and wait the prescribed time and then the title will automatically transfer to you. _________________ Stefan

Check with the salvage yards in your state. A salvage yard may file for a title on a vehicle when the storage fees exceed the value of the vehicle. A registered letter must be sent to the last registered owner of the vehicle and if that person does not pay the storage fee, or cannot be located, a new title will be issued to the Yard. Then have the Yard transfer the new issued title to you.
That is the way it works here in Ohio. You will need a Wrecker Yard to work with you.
The use of the donner car would, in Ohio, get you charged criminally.
Just a suggestion. I've used this method a couple times. |

Well it's kind of confusing. I bought the car from a guy in new jersey. I believe he may have registered the car but never transferred the title in NJ. So he wrote me a bill of sale and gave me the PA title that has his info filled in the buyers location on the back. He bought the car from an used auto dealer here in PA a few years back. So the title says Green lane Auto. I did some searching already and found out that the owner and business has passed away.
The guy from New Jersey was going to help me get the title in his name and then transfer it into my name. But when I was ready to, he had a life crisis and stopped talking to me. |
