Trivia question this, but anyone any idea which is the oldest 924 Turbo still in existence? Lowest chassis number etc?

Not mine, that's for sure.
I assume you're talking about actual customer-delivered models, not prototypes and factory mules, etc?
I reckon that the first ones would've been delivered in Germany, and not The 'States or whatever. Based on that, and that the German cars appear to be maintained pretty well on average, I'd say it's a fair bet the oldest one will be in Germany somewhere. Actually I was including prototypes etc... looking for literally the lowest known chassis number... guessing the first few were destroyed for crash testing etc... _________________ 5 * 924 Turbo!

It's an interesting question. The factory might well have numbered the prototypes, mules, etc, differently to the production models, which could make it a moot point (insomuchas the chassis number would be irrelevant, it would just be a search for the oldest car you could reasonably call a 924).
This chart (which by no means is definitive but it's the only one I'm aware of) seems to imply that the production cars were numbered from 00001, which is what makes me think that the chassis number might not be relevant to the prototypes, mules, etc. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Interestingly, I just bought a 924 Turbo which was built as a prototype by the factory... it's chassis number is 9249100005 (yup, it predates 924 Turbo chassis numbers).... reckoning it must be one of the oldest still out there!? _________________ 5 * 924 Turbo!

Was the factory that confirmed it was a protoype 924 Turbo. One of 4 built for the Safari rally...
Just wondered if there were any others out there? (Other than the other 2 surviving Safari cars... which I think have later VINS.) _________________ 5 * 924 Turbo!

Just checking the VIN number's in Jurgen Barth's "The Porsche Book" and it appears the Turbo Rallye numbers are:
9247100016/9248100013/9248100015/9248100019
all listed for the 1979 model year.
Production ROW NA numbers for 1979 are 924910001-9249110475.
Production ROW Turbo numbers for 1979 are 924940001-9249401982.

There's one in Australia that was one of the ones that was changed to NA as they didn't quite have the homologation through in time. It came to NZ to do a rally a few years a go. _________________ Andrew

Yes Harm... I picked up that one!
Spoke to Jurgen and he confirmed it was one of the 4 Safari cars... and it was rallied for the rest of it's career by Ristl who was one of the gang of 3 (with Barth and Kausmaul) that launched the rally project.
TJC, yes there were 6 cars built, 4 given official VINs but the first 2 weren't. Given the other one (of the latter pair) was destroyed during the Recce I think... guessing makes mine the oldest?
Harm, why did you refer to it as the Pirelli car??? I agree the colours are similar, but if you've got some photos of it running in anger before the paint faded I'd love to see them!! Research coming up a bit blank at the moment...

Actually thinking about it logically, the '79/'80 Monte car was built before mine as a N/A car then converted to Turbo... so that would be earlier/as early.
But she's locked away in a museum unlikely to run again... unless I can persuade her owner to part with her

Great stuff! So then you have one of the two Turbo developement cars that Jurgen and his crew (or gang of three!) first prepared for rally use...Congrats!
As the story goes, they had to run the Monte with a NA engine since the Turbo was not yet homogolated as a steel strike slowed down production and there weren't enough Turbos built in time for the rally.

Collected her today and then drove up to Sinsheim to compare her with the Safari and Monte cars that they have up there....
She is REALLY something special... very expensive BOSCH ignition system on her that apparently is forerunner of the stuff they used on the 962s, special gearbox/diff plus all the factory ratio charts and wiring diagrams. Alloy doors which are only on one of the cars in Sinsheim etc...
Herr Freisinger found the original works dash, seats and a some other spares in the warehouse that had come off her when the previous owner had tried to convert her to a road car ?!?!
So a long haul ahead to put her back to her former glory, but all the parts on her match the Monte car spec in Sinsheim pretty much spot on (it has same ignition/doors/cage/intercooler system/dash and seats) so it's only really a case of rubbing down the rust and painting her nicely... HAHAHAHA... yeah right.
Lots of refurb and rebuild ahead I'd guess....
Will keep you all posted.
