A few weeks ago, I bought a 1981 931 for the sum of $300. In the description of the craigslist ad, it said it had a "new engine". As the story goes, the original owner joined the army and got shipped away and he left the car with his sister. The story seemed a little too good to be true.. Until recently
Fast Forward to today:
Because of the utter disarray the engine was in (electicals unplugged, hoses just hanging every which way), we decided to lobotomize the engine to see if the engine was really new. Out exterior of the engine didn't appear to be, it was very dirty and there was all kinds of dirt and debris littered about the engine bay. As you can see from the picture above, the top of the head appears to be all new components, devoid of any wear or oil!
We stopped short of taking the head off because we couldn't figure out how to get the exhaust off without making an entire day of it. On a side note, is it possible to simply disconnect the turbo and pull the head off with the exhaust manifold attached? _________________ Brian

'Simply disconnect the turbo'
If the hardest job on the car is simple then you'll have no problems! _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

Possible, but less time consuming in the long run to pull the motor, IMO.
Also, please cover that turbo outlet with a rag or plastic bag before some murphy-propelled item falls in there. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Not sure I see the wisdom of taking the head off if all the components look new. If they are, it is reasonable to assume a valve job has been performed. Once the head is off, would you then remove the pistons to examine the rings, etc.? Pressure test the head? The block?
I think the most reasonable course is to make sure all your marks are in the proper place, perhaps do a leak down.
Just a thought experiment. _________________ "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you are goin' all the way."

The main reason why I decided to take the head off is because it appears that some kind of rodent made its home right above the spark plug holes which don't have any spark plugs in them. Each spark plug hole is full of dirt and gunk and I'm afraid more crud has fallen into the combustion chambers.
And I didn't want to just assume the engine was brand new and assembled by a responsible person. For example, when we took the valve cover off, we discovered a large washer laying in there. Not sure if it would have caused any problems in the feature but, it was a good find. We're probably got to stop once we verify there is no gunk in the combustion chambers. _________________ Brian

Here's a good picture of the spark plug holes. It's bad. It's almost as if someone or something packed all of this muck in there. It looks like this on each of the 4 holes.
FYI, I normally have blue rags in each of the ports and other open holes. I took the rag out for this picture and promptly replaced it afterwards _________________ Brian

Time to pull the motor inspect to see what you have. Then replace what ever seals may be leaking and give it a good detail.
Sounds like fun.

Indeed!
Don't mind the blood in the first picture; I didn't realize how heavy the head was going to be and I crushed my finger while lifting it out.. Whoops!
Anyway, it appears that a mouse did indeed make its home on top of one of the pistons. Actually, there was debris on top of each of the pistons, some more than others. Talk about an interesting find. _________________ Brian
