|

some pics of the three clutch systems- Spec stage 2+ then audi 200 then Stock clutch
The middle clutch is of the Audi 200 turbo clutch( we think) that came from Andrew NZ... seems to fit as per stock clutch--notice finger sizes-- Ill be using the spec stage 2+ but apparently the audi200 is a direct upgrade to NA (same fit but for a higher torque engine)
The throwout bearing supplied with the spec clutch setup is a good fit but the pilot bearing is too big or am i missing something??????

I'd be interested in the torque rating on the Audi 200 clutch and the Spec. Stock is 173 lbs. My "custom" set up is only 235 lbs and was a bit of a pain (but cheap).

dont ko\now about the audi unit but this is the email i got from David Norton at SPEC
Clutches are rated in torque, so for 250 ft lbs + with good clutch life I like st2+ or 3. The small 8.5 diameter is limiting, even with our high clamp load version. The st1 is OK just over 200 ft lbs, but I’d rather help you get into your budget than sell you something that may not live as long as you want. Has the car been on the dyno yet ?
AND
Yes, st2+ would be fine..stage 3 as well. The st3 is plenty streetable, but on the upper end of street aggressiveness, so the engagement will be quicker than a normal fiber based clutch. The st2+ is a hybrid and drives very nicely. So I would choose based on desired engagement feel from a stop..the 2+ will feel more like stock than the 3, but the st3 is still considered a street/track unit.

so stage 1= 200ftlb plus and stage 2+ is 15% greater then stage 2 _________________ 1979 NA

Can't remember the exact specs, but I had the two tested, and from memory the Audi 200 one was about 30% stiffer than the 924 one. _________________ Andrew

Interesting stuff. I posted on here a while back trying to see what kind of bhp/ torque the standard NA and turbo clutches could handle. Reason being I'm in the middle of a supercharger project on a turbo engine (aim 240bhp) but to go into a NA shell so whilst it's easier to keep the NA sized torque tube and cable clutch etc, there's no point if I'm going to shred it at WOT.
Have you been running your car with a standard clutch and if so what power did it handle?
I have a nearly new standard NA clutch which I'm going to trial just out of curiosity but I'm sure I'll be needing a spec 2.
Can you post up the costs for the spec items?? I'm in UK but good to know.

For your application, you just need the NA bellhousing with an early 931 TT The clutch splines on the 931 are more common so swapping in a stronger clutch from another vehicle is a little easier. _________________ Stefan
