|
|
I'be been trying to get her roadworthy for months now, and after taking her in for bearings, rotors, and tie-rods, I picked her up only to find someone there abused her and now the cam and lifters need replacing (they were on the way out already, but not gone, now they are toast...)
As the title says, my 924 has a bad cam, so I'm looking for opinions on a good source for a mild street cam, and replacement lifters. I've been searching, and if I'm going to replace it, why pay the $400+ for a stock piece? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I just want to get her running and back on the road. |

| Still trying to find a source for lifters. Anyone? Should I stick with stock, is there an upgrade option that will replace the stock lifters? The stock exhaust manifold has been replaced by the PO with a tubular header, and larger than stock exhaust pipe, so I can go with larger than stock cam, any suggestions? |

There are some cam and lifter options, but they aren't cheap. You really should spend the money on upping the flow through the head with porting and larger valves, IMHO.
There was a discussion recently about adapting hydraulic lifters, but I don't think it has gotten to the stage of even being tried, yet. _________________ Stefan

There was a thread about solid lifter replacements, last talked about a few months back. Don't know the result but it wouldn't hurt to ask... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| Thank you, I will be reading those threads shortly. I'm not replacing because I want to, I'm doing it because the stock cam is toast, and 2 lifters are as well. I'd rather spend the money elsewhere, but I'm doing what I need to to drive the car. Almost have the front end rebuilt, then I was going to move on to the rear, but this came up... Such is life with an older car, I guess, I just didn't realize how hard certain parts would be to get ahold of... still love the car though... |

Make sure to read up ZDDP additives as the lifters will not last long with the newer oils without the additive. _________________ Stefan

| Good advice, I wonder if that is why the cam went in the first place, it's getting plenty of oil... |

I wonder, which lifters failed?
Might want to check that the oil tube elbow isn't leaking and the oil tube isn't clogged before you put it back together, just to be safe.
Obviously, the proper lifter clearances need to be set and maintained, but eventually they will still wear out.
BTW, EBS Racing has followers for $90/ea. and you need to supply your own adjuster screws (save them from the original ones). http://www.ebsracing.com
http://www.integralcams.com/924.htm has camshafts (or did, not sure if they still do)
Piper Cams makes the solid, lightweight lifters: http://www.pipercams.co.uk, not sure if there is a vendor in the states that stocks them or if a group buy is planned anytime soon.
Good luck! _________________ Stefan

My understanding is Integral went out of business a couple months ago. I see on the bottom of their web site that they're now available through Megacycle cams.
Anyone heard of or dealt with these guys before? _________________ 78 924 NA

| Oh my that's expensive. That wouldn't be bad if I was building the engine for more power, but as a replacement part, it's too rich for me... |

Stock is $90/ea. = $720.00 for a set of 8
Piper is $131/ea. = $1048.00 for a set of 8.
And of course you should replace them all if you're using a new cam. _________________ Stefan
