Damn it Jim.. I'm not a doctor!!
These torsion bars are kickin my arse.
I've read about that 5-lug set up there in Portland for sale, cost as much as my 924 did. That may be further down the line, let me see how sucky the brakes are at an autocross. I have some front body work I'd like to tend to first.
The later suspension plan will be some Weltmeister springs up front, drop it the 1-1/4", new bushings, struts and shocks. And once again, reindex the rear. So fiat22turbo, those 944 torsions would be a good match for the new front springs.
I have a mechanic buddy that has some old VW Beetles, that looks like the same type of torsion bar set up, I'll see if he can do it.
I dropped my Saab down in an afternoon and a six-pack so I have the know-how.
When I got into this hobby, they said there would be no math.

Heh, I didn't do any math on mine.

Dropping the rear suspension assembly is fairly easy:

Axles and brake lines.

Transmission mount bolts/nuts

Lower shock bolts

Torsion bar carrier to body bolts (just ahead of the rear suspension)

"Banana" or Torsion bar carrier arms to body (top of the rear wheel well) bolts/nuts.

Once out, you can get it on the bench, etc and clean it up, swap parts, etc.

Might be a good idea to add rear sway bar mounts to the torsion carrier while you have it out. Even if you don't have a sway bar right now, you'll want one if you're going to go AutoX.

I'll work on getting a shipping quote for ya.

Don't have those. Will that matter?

No, the 77's are really easy to do - I have mine out at the moment, and once I had the axles disconnetced it only took about 10 minutes!

Just the 4 bolts holding the torsion bar carrier to the floor, lower shock mount bolts and brake lines to worry about.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but once you've got it out, what do you do to lower it?

Anyone? Mine is early 77, and I'd love to get it a little lower.

I have an early '77 and as Andrew said the carrier comes out easily. Getting it back in by myself took some artful jacking and blocking work. I put in 944 23.5mm torsion bars and the adjustable spring plates. They are just a bolt in.

I built simple wood stand to hold the carrier up so that I could take my time setting up the torsion bars. One trick is to measure the torsion bar drop with the shock disconnected before removing the carrier to get you a base point. While your in there replace to inner torsion bar rubber bushings with urethane ones from a Super Beetle(different than 944). The outer 944 bushings fit. Getting the old outer bushings off is a pain, many folks burn them off, but I cut them with a utility knife then heated the bushing with a propane torch and peeled them off.

I would also recommend putting some sway bar mounts on the carrier while it is out. I have 951 sway bars front and rear on mine with the stock front springs so it is pretty unbalanced spring wise. I haven't headed towards the 5 bolt setup as most folks around here want about $200 for both the front and back brake setups and the '77 also needs the front uprights as the spindles are smaller also. So combine that with wheels and you come up with a quick $1000.

Mike, if you come up for the engine, I have a 5-bolt set for cheap.

So to get this sorted... if I have holes cut, I can remove bearing flange 15 by undoing the bushing mount bolt 19 & bolts on strut 22 (26,27,30A)

the whole lot should pop out free then...obviously supporting both the carrier tube and trailing arm in the process

and when doing opposite sides, do the inner and outer spline points get turned the opposite or same way...

i.e
left rear side
to drop 3/4" or 3 x 6.5mm approx or 3 x 50minute increments...
inner goes 3 splines CCW and outer gets 3 splines CW

right rear side
inner goes 3 splines CW and outer gets 3 splines CCW
sound about right??
