|
|
Some of you guys are probably aware that there are a few o-ring seals in the 924 turbo oil system made of Viton. It is also a pretty common material for seals in high pressure fuel systems in cars - its like a brown rubbery type stuff that outlasts normal rubber and is resistant to petroleum products.
Last night a friend of mine forwarded me a training presentation he received as part of his work in a bauxite mine. The presentation was specifically warning people about the dangers of heating Viton up to beyond 300 degrees celcius.
The long and short of it is IF YOU BURN VITON IT WILL PRODUCE HYDROFLOURIC ACID WHICH WILL KILL YOU.
It sounds extreme but here are some cut and pastes from the document:
| Quote: | SKF is informing that Viton (fluoroelastomer), if heated to 300deg C can produces Hydrofluoric Acid.
Viton is a component of many oil seals and may be supplied to your company as part of our supply agreement.
This by-product can be lethal by absorption. |
| Quote: | Viton, (fluoroelastomer) a DuPont product is used in high stress applications in Oil Seals and is provided from multiple suppliers.
This mainly occurs in Oil Seals and Sealed Bearings on Mobile Equipment, Dragline/Shovels and other Large Gear assemblies.
Please also be aware that Viton (fluoroelastomer) is stable and does not have any known detrimental health effects until heated to above 300 degree C or exposed to naked flame. |
| Quote: | Exposure to Hydrofluoric Acid (HF)
Symptoms of skin exposure to dilute HF are not felt immediately, but exposure of less than 10% of the body to it can be fatal, even with immediate medical treatment. Highly concentrated solutions may lead to acute hypocalcaemia , followed by cardiac arrest and death, and will usually be fatal in as little as 2% body exposure (about the size of the sole of the foot).
This substance is extremely toxic and has the capacity to kill upon exposure rather than simply damage skin and eyes.
It should be handled with extreme care, beyond that given to hydrochloric, sulphuric, or other mineral acids.
(Hydrofluoric acid is best known to the public for its ability to dissolve Glass by reacting with SiO2 (silicon dioxide) |
Very slim chance anyone would burn the viton seals in our cars but who knows... you might be using a gas axe on a chump car or similar and just decide to cut through a seal. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

here is some additional info
| Quote: | While safe under designed operating conditions, VITON has been found to decompose into dangerous hydrofluoric acid if exposed to high temperatures. When inspecting equipment which has been exposed to a high temperature, check if any gaskets, seals or “O” rings have suffered from decomposition. These will appear as a charred or black sticky mess.
You must not, under any circumstances, touch either the seal or the equipment until a substantial cooling period has been allowed and the equipment has been decontaminated. Disposable, heavy-duty plastic gloves approved to withstand contact with hydrofluoric acid, safety glasses and a face shield must be worn and the affected area must be cleaned using wire wool and a detergent solution. The gloves must be safely discarded after use. |

that acid will kill you if you inhale alot of it...as i remember it will stop your heart.
i dont think there is enough stuff to burn in a gasket to produce that much amount of gas that would actually kill you....well unless you are sniffing the flame _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits
