Could it be true?

I e-mailed the guy on all the details and more pictures, so I will be looking into this.

Guys,
Be careful with the 356 shopping. There are no inexpensive ones. $25K cars are snapped up immediately by the 356 Registry folks and even those may need major floorpan surgury. Cheaper ones that look nice are scams - the scammers re-use other people's photos. Less than $10K cars are swiss cheese. Restorations done right cost $30 - 70K and engines (like my avatar) are five times the cost of a 924 rebuild.
Oh, and when you drive one, keep thinking 1962 VW Beetle and you will be impressed with how much better the 356 is.
Chuck

Hmm well this one is done all through eBay.
I don't know yet. I'm still sending this guy lots and lots of questions. Could be a scam, more than likely is, but I'm seeing all what this guy has to say about it.

Here is his latest e-mail:

I lost my old job and I had to move to Trenton because i found something
else here, i made arrangements with DAS Auto Shippers for the
transaction i had with a buyer but his loan was not approved and the
money that I paid to DAS are not refundable. I also have a contract with
them and I can only use their shipping services. The good news for you
is that you get free shipping. The car is at the shipping company in
Trenton IL ready to be delivered to a new buyer. Since I'm away with
business right now a local inspection cannot be performed. However, I do
offer a 30 days inspection period prior to buying the car if we close
the deal through ebay. Let me explain how the whole process works:

1. you send the amount due to ebay's Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP)
service
2. ebay will confirm me that you have made the payment and that
everything is ok.
3. i will ship the car so you can inspect, test and make a decision if
you will keep it or not. You have 30 days from arrival date to do that.
4. if you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in the
ad, and as described by me and also a clear title you will receive all
your money back from ebay motors. Their Buyer protection is for amounts
up to $50,000.
5. if everything is ok you will have to send ebay your approval to
release the funds to me.
If you agree with this process please send your full name and shipping
address so i can make the shipping arrangements and start the procedure
through ebay.
I'm waiting for your email asap because I have other potential buyers
and I don't know what to say to them.

***SCAM!!***

Run away. I've seen almost this same story on craigslist many times. Read this: http://www.firstcarguide.com/car-seller-scam---is-this-a-car-scam.html

seen similar here and in Oz there is no Ebay buyer protection for cars anymore, might be the same with you.

use an escrow service that you choose

VPP doesn't work like escrow. it's a service that handles a possible refund if you get screwed in an ebay motors transaction. and this vehicle may not be eligible for VPP.
Take a look at: http://pages.motors.ebay.com/buy/purchase-protection/

Absolutely a scam. Seen a few of these on other Porsche boards.

Tell him you have a relative living in that town and he'll come over to inspect the car and to talk to him about it.

I bet you'll never hear from him again.

BTW, you can have a lot of fun with these guys, stringing them along just to see how long you can keep them on the hook.

That's a good idea! And go on google maps and find nearby streets and pretend you know exactly where he is. I had a guy on ebay send me a "payment" through email once, I knew it was fake. It was a check that I have to print out! But the funny thing was that the check had his "address" on top to make it look real, turns out the address was on the same block as my college. He was like "i'm in europe right now so I'll send you a check and by the time it clears I'll be back in the US" and I said "how come your home address is the same place as this wood shop down the street from my school"? never heard from him again!

Paypal is now using an escrow type system. Paypal now holds the money until a positive feedback is left on ebay. I would suggest using it since it does have a protection plan.

classic scam. Send him an email telling him to go hump his goat, and quit trying to use the village library internet to scam poor americans out of their hard earned money.

P.S. I stay away from craigslist for this very reason. The high percentage of scammers you encounter is too annoying for me to deal with.
