Oil pressure went to zero while driving...No engine noise...Oil light did come on...Engine was not low of oil...Replace electrical with mechanical gauge, no pressure...Can this be a oil filter problem?..I use synthetic oil..Any suggestions.

Is this a 924S? When mine went to (0) there was a lot of noise and a big hole. Sounds like you may have one of the two wires lose at the oil pressure switch, or a failed switch. For the engine guys to help, them need to know, year, miles and recent work on engine. Hope its a wire or switch problem.

Good luck

On my 79 NA I've got the same issue. I, too, have numerous suspicions. First, I thought it was my switch to synthetic. I chose a thin grade too, and I understand synthetic is thinner and that would seem at idle to have an affect - which BTW was only when I dropped to zero, at idle.

Then, I used a Purilator filter, instead of what I've always used, a Bosch. But I also switch to a thicker oil - which made me think that a thicker filter and oil might have a harder time at idle.

But then I met Paul (and Khal). When they stopped by during the Porsche Parade to check out the resurrection of my other 79 NA Paul provided some insight (bad news to others) on what might be the issue with low pressure. Since it appears I am loosing coolant, I might also be loosing oil - both through the head gasket (ouch).

So, in short, it could be the oil, the filter, or a bad gasket. I would lean toward a gasket if it is only when the engine it hot. If it happens all the time, then I would think is less severe - like the oil type/grade, filter, or connection/gauge.

Hope that helps and good luck.

If this is a 2.5L engine, have you been working on the front of the engine lately? Changed timing and balance shaft belts (or other)?

The drive for the oil pump depends on the crankshaft pulley being tightened to spec (like 150ftlbs). If the crankshaft pulley comes loose, then you get no oil pump drive and no oil pressure.

The other problem could be the OPRV (oil pressure relief valve) is defective or jammed due to a misalignment of the oil cooler housing. Have you had the oil cooler seals replaced, or had the OPRV off/out for some reason? I don't know why, but people insist that hey can remove and replace the oil cooler housing and/or the OPRV without using the alignment tool to set the alignment between the OPRV passage in the engine block and the oil cooler housing, resulting is a jammed OPRV.

The early three piece OPRVs were supposed to be removed and replaced with the later ones, because the early three piece OPRVs fail. A lot of people refuse to have this done because the one piece OPRV costs about $400. Maybe your OPRV failed if you have the old three piece.

The belts were changed right before this happened. That is going to be my first suspect. I will check that and let you guys know. Thanks to all you guys for the info.
