I've been trying to do some basic maintenance on my (now long dormant) '82 RHD 924. After a wonderful case of mistaken identity, I now actually have on the way the correct injectors. Not that the old ones were terrible; just old. The engine doesn't stumble or skip when running and seems to have plenty of power. But it does have to pass an emissions test eventually, thus the desire for new injectors.

However, there seems to be some confusion with my local injector specialist - who hasn't been able to see the car yet but knows the K-Jetronic system very well - about the mounting of the injectors. There seem to be injector holders in may manifold in a fetching shade of orange that did not budge when we pulled the injectors themselves. I got some new holders ('cause they were cheap enough) but showing them to the local injector specialist caused him to scratch his head about what they were for.

I know it makes sense to change the injector seals when I put new injectors in (I have new seals). Is there any point in changing the injector holders, too? They aren't cracked, broken or leaking, AFAIK. I just don't have new seals for them, though, so I'd rather leave them alone.

Wade.

The orange colored plastic injector holders are a upgrade replacement for the original clear/yellowish injector holders which were made from a different material, and had a tendency to fall apart when removed.

Injector holders are supposed to be installed with non-hardening sealant. I use some non-hardening stuff from Permatex that comes in a tube. Unfortunately, some Idiots don't use any sealant on the injector holder threads (leading to some vacuum leaks), and other use more permanent sealants which make removal of the injector holders without destroying them difficult or impossible.

The injectors themselves are installed, sealed, and retained by an o-ring that locks the injector into the injector holder. The original o-rings were made from black rubber, and when they aged, they used to shrink, and get hard as a rock, and brittle as glass. With a tendency to shatter when removed. The updated/superceed part is made from viton, and green in color.

To remove injectors the best way is to use a fuel injector removal tool which hooks under the fuel injector and allow you to use a screwdriver topry it up and out of the cylinder head.

No need to replace the injector holders if they aren't damaged, but you should remove them and reinstall them using an acceptable non-hardening sealer if you don't know if a correct sealant was used when the injector holders were installed.

just an addendum, use a hex bit or allen key on the inserts and turn them counterclockwise to remove... as they are threaded.

Knowing the various minor bodges this car has, it wouldn't surprise me if they were replaced with the wrong sealant. OTOH, all the bodges I have found are clearly uncaring, under-trained, under-paid mechanic idiocies (wrong struts on the hatch, welded the seat rails when the captive nuts broke, mixed bolt sizes on the stone guard...) - the sorts of things done by someone who would not know how the K-Jetronic system worked and wouldn't fiddle without being paid to.

So they're probably okay (touch wood). If I suspect leaks, then okay, I know what to pull apart and check. I did remove the injectors with the proper tool: probably saved us an hour of work.
