I am looking into the feasibility of fitting the common fuel sender, #477 919 051 B, the 5 screw down type to an earlier 77 tank. These had a rare twist in sender, Porsche part # 477 919 051, that is either NLA or way overpriced NOS. It differs from VW ones of the vintage and can`t find any Audi/VW alternative.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/pel_search.cgi?please_wait=N&forumid=&threadid=&command=DWsearch&description=477+919+051+B&x=15&y=6&FILTER_944M=ON&FILTER_TECH=ON&FILTER_SUPP=ON&FILTER_ACCE=ON&FILTER_CARE=ON&FILTER_STUF=ON&FILTER_PERF=ON&FILTER_MISC=ON&FILTER_GADG=ON&FILTER_TOOL=ON#

Could anyone please tell me the overall outer diameter at the flange and the minor diameter at the tube. The PCD of the 5 mounting holes will be difficult to accurately measure and calculate. However I`d appreciate a figure within a few mm. Should hopefully give a good idea if any drilled & tapped holes will be over the thicker reinforcement.

Has any body any experience with buying a replacement? For 78 -88 924s the PET gives #477 919 051 B. Pelican lists them at $67. Foreign Intrigue appears to be the cheapest around at $49.

International shipping seems fair, USPS + $5. Haven`t dealt with them previously, so are they reputable?

Look.......

is this the puppy?

I will try to measure my later one off my 1984 if it isn't raining, tomorrow for you.

Just out of interest RC and completely OT (as you are one of the few people on this board that would know what I'm on about). ....My radio relay chatters.
The radio relay is energized when the key is pushed into the ignition barrel, (pushed in, not turned, just pushed). It runs the sunroof as well as the radio. I think the ignition switch is a bit dickey. Not sure until i investigate.
It is mostly on when the key is in the ignition but the switch seems to break then re-make when i go over bumps. The rest of the ignition switch functions fine so..... i was thinking of dumping a reasonable size electrolytic capacitor over the coil of the radio relay. Maybe put a diode like a IN1004 in series with the live feed to the coil (and cap) to stop any other loads (other than the radio relay coil) in the same circuit from discharging the cap. I'm hoping this will hack the intermittent ignition switch problem and keep the radio relay coil energized when the power to it is momentary lost due to vibration. So what size cap do you think would do the job, 10,000uf 16v?

Exactly!

porsche.racer? You haven't got any 944, 2" (52mm) gauges have you?
I need a clock and a voltmeter in Black/Yellow

I will have to check, I have a collection of clocks..... but they have not been tested for some years... I will check... no go on the voltmeter.

Anyone?

Anyone with one screwed in able to measure the internal and overall measurements of 2 adjacent screw heads? (average pitch)

Sorry, should have said PCD = Pitch Circle Diameter. It's the diameter of the circle that the 5 screws are on. Like our wheels have a PCD of 130mm.

It`s a bit difficult to measure on 5 holes but easiest to calculate from the distance between 2 adjacent hole centres. There`s a reinforcing plate fixed to the inside of the tank underneath where the sender should screw but its not very wide and feels like ridges on it. I Really want to see where the holes will go before I start drilling & tapping them or ordering the part. Would like to see basic info like this posted so others can access it if ever needed.

I know exactly what you mean RC.
I was hoping to get the diameter measurement to you but I was called into work yesterday and have to work again tomorrow also. Plus i ended up getting drunk this eve while watching England play USA in the World Cup.

Will see if i have time on Monday if someone hasn't posted the dimensions you need by then.

I cleaned my fuel sender 2 years ago and i guess it needs looking at again. I have just brimmed the tank (which i don't do too often) and my gauge is only reading 3/4 of a tank full.

Would it not be easier to bid for porsche.racer's screw-in one?

@porsche.racer, any luck with the clock?

A big thank you to Harm for the measurements and to Mike (porsche.racer) for the OE sender. Although not fitted or tested yet it does "look" good. Hopefully will save drilling & tapping for a while.

Upon reflection, the single O ring seal, as fitted to early models, never leaked anyway. Replacement O rings are cheap at the local seal shop.

The later type has 6 potential leak sources, the rubber gasket and each of 5 screw holes that need a (nylon) washer to seal them.

Wonder why Porsche changed design?
