Help! Car has the 16" trashcan lid wheels, maybe the ET22? offset, 225/50/r16's, and spacers. Not a good setup in my opinion, so a friend generously donated some 15" phone dials to me, ET53 offset, all good. Problem is the stud bolts on my hubs are too long? Did someone swap out the studs with longer ones? Do I need to find a set of hubs now too? Can I just use longer lugs? Can studs be replaced safely or should I look for 4 hubs?
Also, when I do end up completing this change to a more normal size wheel & tire, I will be donating the 16" wheels to "a good cause" - they need work, chrome but peeling, a few dings, etc., but seem straight. _________________ UnderDog

You didn't mention the wheel width. I take it that the wheels are off a late 944?
You're going to find that it's cheaper to replace the wheel hubs with ones with the correct length studs, than to buy the studs (and then find someone to press them in). You can't just pound on them in, and the studs are too expensive to buy one by one.
When I needed to replace some damaged studs in the hubs I was planning on using for a four wheel disc conversion, I ended up taking the studs I needed from some spare wheel hubs instead of ordering replacement studs (which were priced at $14-$25 each at the time, depending on the length). |

Yes, wheels are from a '88 944 I think. not sure of wheel width, but they have 205/65/r15 tires on them. I think thats the exact recommended default size for my '88 924.
I was afraid of that hub think - looks like I need to purchase a set of 4 used hubs - then sell mine to recoup the cost. _________________ UnderDog

Was going to suggest that. . .you might even make money.
Regarding the rears, removing them will likely destroy your wheel bearings, so you might want to factor in the cost and labor for replacement.
Crazy idea. . .could you cut the studs down with a cutting wheel and then chase the threads with a die? _________________ Toofah King Bad

If you're lucky, you can press the studs out with a good c-clamp and a socket.
The front isn't too bad since you can pop it off fairly easily.
The rear are the difficult ones.
I might consider finding open ended lug nuts that will thread all the way on, might be cheaper than replacing all of the hubs or the studs. _________________ Stefan

Can't you buy a set of steel wheel nuts (open lug nuts) and let the bolts stick out a little?
That would be the cheapest option.

356, 911, 912, 914 steel lug nuts are open ended and will thread onto the 924 studs.

exposed bolts with open nuts would not be a bad way to go in the short-term, it probably won't look all that bad. Then I can take my time and find hubs, or someone to cut the bolts down. Had not even considered that option. _________________ UnderDog

Paint the studs, nuts and holes in the wheels flat black and no one will notice them unless they get really close. Especially if the wheels themselves are a dark color. _________________ Stefan
