Hi all, new owner here. Picked up an '88 924s last week, it needs a few things, but clutch is the major item. Looking for a reasonable priced quality shop in the south-eastern CT area. I'll probably have a bunch more questions in the future... (got rid of an '85 BMW 635 CSi, so on to the new toy!)

Expect to pay around $1,800 - that's the quote I've got last year! At first I thought that's a rip off but this price seems to be the average for a "quality" job if done officially. Still hunting myself for a cost alternative...

Good luck!

I had a feeling that was the price range. Car still drives fine, no clutch slip, but can feel the failing rubber when downshifting and the clutch takes the load rather than matching the RPM's first. The alternative is doing it myself - have a brother with every tool known to man, but its a long day & big job, time == money for me.

A couple of years ago, I bought the Sachs clutch kit online for about $400, and the local shop installed it for me for about $900. Total cost = $1300.

I see the autocom oe kit runs about $240 (and free shipping). Should I stay away from this one? And just go with the Sachs?

If I found the correct store, you must get a HUGE discount.

http://www.autocom.com/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=2269

If you are interested in CenterForce you can get better prices...

I do like the Centerforce Clutch Troubleshooter PDF

http://media.centerforce.com/DiagGuide/DiagnosticGuide04DL.pdf

Sachs will keep the "feel" of the car OEM.
If your pressure plate is in good condition, you could just replace the clutch disc. I put in an Italian MFG disc that cost $199 and am very satisfied.

From the Pulpit of John

The beginning....

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/494703-clutch-disc-new-vertex-vs-old-sachs-comparison.html

Update:

After a year of use in the 1987 DD, I am very satisfied. There is a "very litttle bite" when you engage. I did adjust my clutch MC rod above the clutch pedal a couple of times as it broke in.

I have done some serious pullouts and hard driving and no slippage.
If you read the link, I reused the PP. The FW was ground. I had the PP & FW balanced. I reused the TO bearing after repacking.

The disc is available from Vertex and 944online.

Honestly, THAT is an amazing price!

I would buy one for my cars if I had not done both.
5 spring clutch disc, TO-throw out, pressure plate and alignment tool in the kit.

Thanks

John
