Just as simple of a question as the title. is there any visual differences between a 2.5 or a 3.0L N/A?

the car we have we think is a 2.5 but it may be a 3.0L

we are turning it into a lemons racer... i have a thread in the racing forum about it.

thanks all,
pete

I've never seen a 3.0 but your pic looks just like my 2.5.

Its either a 2.5 or a SOHC 2.7, to be a 2.7 it would have to be a 89 or later model. The 3.0L were all DOHC motors, only released in the S2's and the 968. There was also a 2.7 DOHC released in the 944 S.

All 944 turbos were SOHC

its definitely an 8v porsche 924S. if it's a stock 924S then its an '87 or '88- the latter is 160hp, the former is detuned a bit less than 160hp.

Daniel

the DOHC 944S was still only a 2.5 only the '89 944 8v got 2.7

well our car is an 84 with a 87 supposedly drive train. there is 4 wheel 5 lug brakes and there is a re-man tag on the block so we were wondering if it could be a 2.7 or 3.0. it is at least a 2.5L

thanks

NOT.

There were no 924 models brought into the US from 1983-1985. From 1983-1984, the original 2L 924 continued to make it into some ROW markets, but NOT in the US. In 1986, the 924S with the 2.5L motor was introduced into the US, and continued through 1988. As noted above, the original 2.5L motor in the 924S had ~150 BHP (1986-87). In 1988, the compression was upped a bit to produce 160 BHP. I doubt very seriously if there was any transplanting involved on that car. Ever. Probably just a run-of-the-mill 1987 2.5L motor that may have been pulled and rebuilt at some point (I'd lay a dollar to a donut it was due to a busted timing belt / bent valves).

What's the VIN? That will answer a lot of questions...

It is def not a 3.0 for reasons stated above. The 2.7 was a one year motor, odds are you have a 2.5.

from the factory there are:

2.5 8v
2.5 8v turbo
2.5 16v
2.7 8v
3.0 16v
3.0 8v turbo (968 turbo rs only)

after market you will see mixtures of the above and additional displacements

2.8 (2.5 block with 3.0 crank)

you can also bore/sleeve any block and use a 3.0 crank to get 3.2+

Pete, you should just stick a Lima in it.

It's a little weird to see a name from TurboFord pop up here.

what about vibration? i tought that 3.0L is the limit...after that you get nasty vibration for a 4cly.

a mercrusier 221 is a 3.7L 4 cylinder- half of a ford 460, even some parts and a head from a 460 fits. people use them for racing all the time.

NHV is a problem for any motor, and not a if it is this big or any set limits.

Vibration occurs over 2.0. . .hence, balance shafts added to the 2.5 and variants (actually licensed from Mitsu).
