Any body know why the 951 S had this gusset on the frame rail / shock tower? (I know it's for strength, but why specifically on that car and not the others)? Any benefit to copying the design on an earlier car?

According to this thread, this was a factory gusset on the 88 951 S. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Ahh, excellent, opposite side even! Thanks Alex.
I'm just trying to figure out what benefit this little gusset would have provided. It hardly seems substantial enough to provide any meaningful chassis rigidity. Interesting that it's roughly in the same position as the tubular strengthening bar that apparently was installed on all of the US 931s (but apparently NOT on ROW 931s)...wonder if it was a US specific thing having to do with front end collision issues and the turbo... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

for the 951 i would guess that its there because the engine sits on the front cross-member and maybe they figured this thing would help improve the stress areas where the strut tower meets the chassis. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Except that all 944 engines sit on the crossmenter.
I agree with ideola that it isn't substantial enough to add any meaningful rigidity. |

| They certainly don't seem worthy of replication/retro-fit. I can confirm that they don't feature on any UK standard S2 models that I've seen (available with M030 as an option) and I don't know if the 89-91 Turbo SE (as it was known here) features these gussets. Perhaps they are part of the M030 package? The only way to know is to ask a lucky S2 owner with this rare option. My feeling is that if the car was equipped with M030 from the factory then it will feature these gussets... if this is the case, then my guess for why Porsche used them would be due the increased braking force an inherent weight transfer that the 928S4 front calipers can produce??? |

Or maybe it's something that was required by mid- to late-80s US safety laws? If it doesn't show up on ROW cars, then I suspect it might be something along those lines, just like the tubular bar on the 931 in the same spot. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
