Would a 928 transmission fit into a 931 with little (or hopefully no) modification?

why would you want the ass heavier? i'm quite sure the 928 unit is heavier than the 931 one.

My guess is he might be looking for a transmission that can take more HP. My 928 has a 5 speed and 330 HP. The transmission can be destroyed if not treated with some respect......so the 928 5 spd isn't exactly bullet proof. I've heard the 928 automatic transmissions are stronger than the 928 5 spd box.

I would take the weight penalty for a 968 6-speed!

the 928 5 speed manuals are weak(mercedes units)..they often break due to high torque..wich is really not that high...the strongest gearboxes of them all is the 6 speed 968 CS one...it can handle 500 Nm of torque in racing mode...all day..every day i looked for a 6 speed but the costs are very high and as i understand the linkage must be modified and also there might be some spare wheel well cutting involved.

I was thinking that if I need a new tranny (if changing bushings doesn't lessen the slop), I could get one of those, but I guess they take more modification than just adding an audi box (and needed components) from a 924.

It would be a difficult swap. You need to cut the floor in the rear seat area along with the torque tube. I don't think that it is worth the effort and expense because of the weaknesses these transaxles have.
