I suppose you mean timing belts. And the answer is yes, lots of people here change their own including myself. You can get yourself into long arguments over just HOW it should be done. THere is the party that wants to spend 1500 to have a certified mechanic do it and tells everyone else they are stupid to risk doing it on their own. There is the party that spends an arm and a leg on "genuine porache" parts (if there is such a thing) and the original 400 dollar plus tension tool, and they say people are stupid not to use the porshce tool and porsche parts, and people are stupid for taking it to a mechanic to do it when they could buy the tool themselves. Then there is the group who uses alternative tensioning tools and cheaper locally found parts that say everybody else is stupid for sinking 1000s of dollars into a car not worth much more than 3 or 4 thousand dollars. WHo is right? Well nobody of course.

So, what am I saying? Doing a timing belt job is not hard at all. Attention to detail will get you through it fine. As far as parts and tools, that is up to you. You can do the entire job including idlers, belts, re-man waterpump and front engine seals for about the price of a porsche water pump if you do the ebay route. Or you can spend a whole lot more and get it all from porsche to make yourself feel better.

By the way, I have a 1988 Lemans american version. It would be reallt great if you could post some pics of your car for everyone to see. We dont get to see the euro versions very often.

You wont. The noticeable diffirence will be at lower rpms and idle especially. And it is not a very big diffirence. At 4000 rpm everything is going to smooth out. I drove a 924S without a blalnce shaft belt for a few months, and when I put the belt back on it was noticeable enough to be a relief not to have the extra shaking at idle.

My balance belt was off by a good 30 degrees (10 teeth) and getting it right made huge difference in engine vibration, especially around 4-5k RPMs.

Porsche designed the balance shafts for reason - they work!

I imagine having a balance shaft adding to the imbalance rather than countering it would cause a great deal of shake.

No, Mitsubishi holds a patent for counter rotating shafts to balance vibration. Porsche chose to pay Mitsubishi a per unit manufactured royalty to avoid a patent infringment lawsuit.

Porsche designed the entire 2.5L engine inhouse.

That makes sense. Fine line, though. I mean, Porsche was willing to stump up the royalties...

Only thing I could add is check the tension after a couple/few hundred miles, I had a small shudder around 3k after a short while just needed the balance belt tighten a little after that its been perfect
