Who has installed a late windshield?
I know they aren't needed with the flush windshield but did you grind off the moulding studs in the windshield jam or leave them?
Thanks! _________________ Auburn, NH

| I'm planning on using a late windshield on my 84 944. I think you will need to grind off the moulding studs to clear the glass. The early 951 had a spacer bonded to the window channel to raise the glass flush. Also the two plastic supports need to be changed to the late type so they are high enough to support the glass. |

I am not 100% sure, but I think you have to change the wiper arms as well... _________________ Kroggers

I have been looking at the pieces needed for this. What was done to make up for the raised windshield was they changed the lower panel. The one that the windshield wiper assembly bolts to. On the early cars (up to '85/1) the place where the shafts go through this panel is dimpled down. On the 85/2 and newer this panel is raised in that place. Here is a page from the factory manual showing this on the late car.

What I plan to do is make up two pieces of sheet metal with dimples to weld in place of the early dimples after I cut the old ones out. To make these up I will place a piece of sheet metal between a socket that fits the inside of the dimple and a pipe fitting that fits on the outside of the dimple in a vice or my hydraulic press. When you crank the vice closed it will put a dimple in the metal. You will need to measure the distance you close the vice so it is approximately the same as the one currently in the car. Then the old parts need to be cut out and the new ones welded in place, upside down.
This will raise the wiper assembly to the correct location. I have already checked the fit and the early wiper assembly will still fit after it is moved up.
You will also need the spacer piece that pushes onto the windshield pinchweld, the two lower corner pieces and the two pieces that support the base of the windshield. The original wipers should fit too. |

The cowl and firewall is all I have left of my 951 parts car, I'll check it out and take some pics for comparison. _________________ Auburn, NH

Your right, the cowl is completely different. Top pic is the 951, bottom 924S.
The wiper arms are also different. _________________ Auburn, NH

I have been "fixing the problem on my car. Here is the beginning. Both are welded now and have roughed out bondo.
I basically made 2 sheet metal pieces, cut out the factory dimples and welded these in.
I believe the late wiper arms are different because splined part where they attach is different.

maybe this is a stupid question, but could i just fabricate a spacer to put under the wiper arm? would there be enough spline engagement? (i havent pulled them off yet.
option #2... by looking at my wipers, it looks like the issue involved without this modification would be the bottom of the wiper arm contacting the glass. could someone simply modify the arms or source new ones (a la vw) that may have the required clearance and the same spline pattern?
i know there is a 924 in "golf" guise that has a late windshield. has he modified his cowl? _________________ 17in caymans, koni yellow coilovers, hypercoil springs, kla solid upper mounts, 968 sway bars, kla drop links, kla strut brace, fidanza flywheel, dansk catback, wilwood front calipers, ss brake lines, e-codes, 944 duckbill, manual rack, momo steering wheel |
