is the drive shaft on an 81 931 compatible with a 80 924? i have a 80 924 that has drive shaft bearing issues (i think). if it isn't the bearings, can i put a complete drive shaft from a '81 931 to a '80 924?
thanks |

No, they're different sizes (20mm vs 25mm).
Clutch, driveshaft, and gearbox are different.. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

To expand a little, 931 and NA torque tubes are not interchangeable. Snailshell and Audi-based torque tubes are not interchangeable.
944 and 924NA torque tubes are not interchangeable.
Audi-based torque tubes from any 924 NA are interchangeable.
Audi-based torque tubes from any 931 / 924S / 944 / 951 are interchangeable.

I would find a donor NA car and remove the entire torque tube. While doing the swap, you might want to go ahead and plan on replacing the bearings...not an easy job, but never a better time to address the issue.
This guy is some distance from you, and shipping would be a PITA (although it can be done...I shipped an entire 931 torque tube to Australia ), but he's giving away two parts cars, maybe you could talk him into giving you one of the torque tubes. Also, check with Eturbo924, he's in NH and frequently has 924 bits available. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I can rebuild them, if you're willing to pay for it.
The bearings are about $90 and it is about 4 hours of work to remove and replace the innards of the tube (the first one always takes the longest). Plus then there is the shipping to/from. I would look at using Greyhound since they do a fairly good job with odd sizes.
Here's a description of all that is involved:

Keep in mind that this is for a 944 so the bearings are different and the torque tube is slightly different since the transmission is also different from yours.
Also, if you haven't done so, you might want to replace the clutch since it would suck to have to do it after the fact.
Something to think about, if yours are worn out a car of similar vintage may have the same problem, though rebuilding a spare would cut down on the time the car is down. _________________ Stefan
