Hi all, I'm new to this board and I don't even have a 924 yet but I'm convinced I want one and I've already started looking. I'm going to pick up an engine tomorrow which I plan on putting into the 924, it's a 12v VR6.

I'm really experienced with early 944s and 968s. I just rebuild the engine in my 968, along with the steering rack. I understand the 924 has a different engine mounting setup than the 944 (but the 924S is the same as 944). I've never done an engine swap but it seems to me the big obstacles are

1. how to put the engine in so the sump clears the crossmember
2. might need a custom header because the engine is meant for FWD
3. custom motor mount brackets
4. bellhousing? flywheel?

I don't remember what the 924 looks like underneath - is there a crossmember? Or does the engine mount to the frame? My biggest question right now is how I will connect the engine to the torque tube. I don't suppose the 924 or 931 bellhousing will bolt to a vr6 engine? If not, is there a place that makes custom bellhousings? If not, could I weld together a vr6 and 924 bellhousing?

This is a great site and I appreciate all the help!

Not to be a search Nazi, but if you use the search function you can read what some of the other VR6 swappers have posted.

The 924 is essentially the same as the 944 underneath (the 944 came from the 924 development and aside from the steering racks and cross-members, the suspensions are mostly interchangeable) So if you're familiar with 944's then 924's won't be very alien to you.

The 924/944/924s used either Porsche derived transaxles or Audi derived transaxles with torque tubes between the bellhousing and the transaxle. The 4-cylinder 924 motor is very similar to the Audi 5-cylinder motors since it was originally an Audi motor. So if something works in an Audi that had a 5-cylinder as an option then you likely can adapt it to the 924 or a 944 with the 924/924 turbo bellhousing.

This might help:

Good luck,

Thanks Stefan. I did try a search before posting but I found very little info and just some references and plans. My brother is a VW guy, I'm a Porsche guy. He is tired of FWD, and I'm tired of timing belts, balance shafts, etc, so we're going to compromise and take the best of both worlds.

Just having gotten back from flogging Red all over Portland like Vin Diesel on crack, I can say I will NEVER tire of balance shafts.
